Having finally finished my first playthrough last year, I can finally say this: "Yeah, it's pretty good." 👍🏿
It's also a bit addictive, so take breaks to avoid burnout. If you aren't willing to, do harder missions than you normally would.
One thing it does really well is, during story missions, surprise dahell outta me. I'm talkin' "wtf, y'all actually did that?" ♥♥♥♥. Just "what in the actual hell, that looks so dope compared to the usual" vibes. These changes really help spice things up.
Oh, do yourself a favor and turn on combat's fast mode in the settings. It might end up feeling like normal speed halfway through anyway and you'll wish you could make it faster. 😅
Before posting this review, I tried sending them a bug report through the 'contact us' form in their website.
Let me add that I am very experienced players at RPGs and this type of game (for instance I kept playing the old Captive for a few years).
After a few runs, I was very surprised to find some faction ratings getting very low very quickly (which there did not seem to be a reason for), so on my last run I picked a mission with only a low objective (+2 to a faction which was at 0, no negative factions results).
I went out of my way NOT to steal anything from that faction, nor do anything which could be considered hostile to them, and just before exiting the mission map, the faction rating was still at 0.
So, I exited the mission map, got the report that the faction was very pleased and that I was getting +2 as expected.
Then I immediately looked at that faction rating... it was now at -18
Besides this, I found that the RNG seemed to be rigged against the player, with fail rates in combats sometimes as high as 80% over the whole battle, against opponents same level who rarely missed.
Same apparently RNG 80/20 odds against the player on items interactions, for instance with terminals, using hacker.
This led me to make a save before every single action, which is really becoming tedious and should not be necessary.
Then when I validated my report for them, I got the message: 'Failed! The error occured, message is not sent. Please try again later.'
I saved my message as a notepad file, so far I got the same error every single time I tried to send it.
The current GOG version of the game is 1.0.2 from the 4th of July 2017
Until they fixed this, avoid this game.
Most of the dungeons are procedurally generated but not all of them. So when people tell you its a roguelike, yeah but not fully. Still. This is awesome. I hope there's a level editor out there like they had for Torchlight and Grimock 1 & 2
I bought this game hoping some something like Grimrock and, while the first couple of hours of the game were fun, the game soon turned into a grind. You'll find yourself fighting the same enemies over and over and too often. A few of them may require some strategy, but only to the extent of "target this one first".
Every other class plays like more or less the same thing, except for Force Psyckers which are the cleric-equivalents and Hackers whose value is mainly in accessing a few exclusive things each level. The cyber ninja class might have been done by a member of the team in isolation, considering that it's the only class that shows 2D sprites of itself during combat, leading to a jarring inconsistency in presentation, but it plays like the majority of classes anyway.
I don't even remember what's the story anymore. Like, nothing about the story stuck with me AT ALL. I guess you are mercenaries? I guess you can pick missions for this or that faction and improve/worsen relations to this or that faction? I suppose there are small ways in which it affects the story, but the story failed so hard to get me to care that it might as well have been absent. It didn't help that the Void Psycker dialogue (that I had for my main character) was so terrible that it felt like I had a memelord interrupting the conversation.
i am really enjoying this game so far. its pretty cool to see a dungeon crawler get a sci/fi setting. 4 stars cause i can't use a controller to play the game.
