Description
You’ve fled your home, only to find yourself lost in space with a damaged ship. Your only option is to beam down to the planet below and gather the resources you need to repair your ship and set off to explore the vast, infinite universe…

In Starbound, you create your own story - there’s no wrong way to play! You may choose to save the universe from the forces that destroyed your home, uncovering greater galactic mysteries in the process, or you may wish to forego a heroic journey entirely in favor of colonizing uncharted planets.

Settle down and farm the land, become an intergalactic landlord, hop from planet to planet collecting rare creatures, or delve into dangerous dungeons and lay claim to extraordinary treasures.

Discover ancient temples and modern metropolises, trees with eyes and mischievous penguins. Make use of hundreds of materials and over two thousand objects to build a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, a medieval castle, or an underwater arcade.

Starbound has been built from the ground up to be multiplayer and easily moddable. You have the tools to make the universe your own and modify the game to suit your play style - add new races, biomes, dungeons, and quests - the possibilities are limitless.
  • Choose from one of 7 playable races and customize your character
  • Save the universe in a story campaign featuring unique characters, bosses, dungeons and quests!
  • You're the captain of your very own starship! Decorate it, expand it and use it to explore a procedurally generated universe
  • Colonize uncharted planets and collect gifts from your tenants - if they like you, they may even ask to join your ship crew!
  • Three game modes - Casual (no need to eat), Survival (eat to survive/drop items on death) and Hardcore (permadeath)
  • Craft thousands of objects - building materials, armor, weapons, furniture and more
  • Capture unique monsters to fight alongside you
  • All content is available in online drop-in/drop-out co-op

DRM-free on Windows not so free on Linux

I recently moved to Linux and I just found out that Starbound requires an open Steam client to run. It doesn't need to be owned on there, it just needs the Linux Steam client to run to open the game. This breaks the whole DRM-free part of owning it on GoG in the first place. I never had a problem like this on Windows so I assume it's a Linux only thing. Since I never had the game in the days of prerelease I'm not one of those people that will get angry on having lost things I never even new existed. But having to resort to running steam for a game I bought on GoG... that's less forgivable.

if you like terraria youll like this

its a very good game, really shines with mods. i didnt have this game around the beta/release time, so i dont have any experience from that time, and i can see people having issues with what happened around that time, but purely from a "ive just stumbled across this game and this is my first time playing it ever in current year" its a good game. similar to terraria in that they are both 2d and block based, but they do take different approaches, but if you like one youll more than likely like the other

Not finished. Not even close.

This game will be really good someday... maybe. As it stands now "Starbound" is a broken, bug ridden, nearly unplayable mess. I tried really hard to love this game (honestly, I still do), but after the third time of having my save game deleted I can't do it anymore. Between the plummets in the frame rate, the CONSTANT crashes, persistent black screens and countless other errors I sincerely regret being an early adopter. It won't take much to make this a great game, but its not finished yet. If anyone reading this is on the fence about getting this game as is, my advice is to wait.

Worth it now

I originally got this on Steam. I hate Steam. Happy it released here! It's a lot like Terraria but the worlds are smaller and they wrap. But you have more worlds to play on. You have to play the main story quest (it seems). But it's a Sandbox so you can do it at your leisure. Terraria allows for you to play whichever character on whichever world at any time. This...not so much. However, I'm starting to wonder if you have one galaxy which all your characters share and you could run into worlds of you other characters? In the beginning, the movement wasn't great and it seemed to eat up a lot of resources. It's much improved since then. There is this bug with the layers though. Over time you start seeing the layers turn black. Apparently they know about it but haven't fixed it. And then there's Moddng. Starbound supports and encourages modding. There are a lot of mods out there which can make your game unique. Make sure they're made for your version though.

Clumsy Controls

First off: 3 Stars means that this game is still enjoyable on my scale. Every time i give this game another try i get alienated by the awkward controls. They allways feel so very clumsy. All the interactions with boxes, the interfaces are so slow, which gives the game a way worse "feeling" than Terraria. Also every planet yo're visiting is just a Planet with one more type of ore and the next "tier" of items.
