bad knockoff
The movement and combat mechanics are so bad it's unbelievable. Some art assets are directly copy-pasted from Terraria.

Great game for the family!
This game is great even in its current condition. I can't wait to see the final product. I have had so much fun playing this game in multiplayer with my children, fixing up our starships and exploring other planets. It is Terraria in space - although, not as fleshed out, yet. There are bugs, dead ends, etc, but so much character and so much to see and do even in its current state.

Imagine No Man's Sky but in 2D...
And I'm not talking just about the gameplay, this game has a similar development cycle and ended up being a massive disappointment in similar ways. The only difference is that unlike No Man's Sky, there is no comeback story here, and never will be. The developer/publisher had a few attempts to salvage the game, but they gave up after the first and only major post-release update (the one you see in the store banner), upon realizing they can make a lot more money by publishing games instead of making them. Really, just get No Man's Sky if your system can handle it, it'll scratch the same itch and it does it much, much better. This game is only good with mods, which is just another way of saying it utterly sucks on it's own.

Non functioning for Linux, no support
I bought Starbound after the 1.0 release. I only run Linux as my OS, and after several days, I have yet to get the game to even generate an error log. It does not run in Linux, period. This is a common issue, not only for Linux users but Mac OSX as well. Even many Windows users on 64 bit OSes and/or 64 bit CPUs are having issues with the game refusing to launch. Chucklefish has thus far completely ignored the issues. To them, the sale is made, they have the money. Why bother to offer a working product when you can scam people out of their money instead? The lesson is learned, never buy a Chucklefish product again. I have asked GOG for a refund, but they too seem to be unwilling to provide support for this game. At this point, I don't even want to do business with GOG anymore, if that's how they treat a long time customer.

Amazing game even in Beta
This is one of these games that allow you to kick back and relax. There's something truly magical about flying your vessel to a remote forest world, beaming down on its surface and finding new creatures, ancient temples and big towns full of villagers and merchants. The soundtrack is truly marvelous and completes the joy of experiencing the infinity of this universe.
