It's a fun enough game, if somewhat bland.
Would probably rate higher if it didn't require odd tweaks to get it working right.
But, sticking the 2006 32bit d3dx10.dll in the same folder as the exe, limiting the mouse polling rate, setting the resolution in the config file and bumping up the render distances should fix most issues
This is a pretty awesome game. It has multiple elements to it that makes it unique among all these space themed games. I don't want to list the pros because it is an awesome game. Just a couple things that you may need to mentally prepare yourself for so you won't get let down.
Eh:
Interface needs a little bit getting used to, but once you're used to the axis, it's pretty easy to navigate. Also, the voice acting is not that bad, but you can't really expect too much voice acting from a game made back in 2005.
Cons:
Lacks character development. There's no interaction with the crew, so you don't really know what's going on. Whenever a character leaves, it really doesn't matter because they are just another character I can use to pilot a fighter.
Goes hand in hand with character development is story. It's too bland and it kind of jumps forward. There's no segue.
Overall:
One of the many games everyone should play because it is a wonderfully blended game.
I have no trouble recommending this if you’re looking for a group combat RPG with spacebar pausing and are in a Sci-fi mood. The game puts you in the role of a mercenary group and follows a set story in a similar vein to Warhammer (Horned Rat and Dark Omen), in that you can pick from multiple missions.
The combat aspect is alright in my opinion, but there are many complaints which stem from a lack of understanding about it - one being that your team doesn’t do what you tell them to do. That’s partially true thanks to various AI parameters. If a party member has a bogey on their tail, they may be more concerned with that than with your order to move somewhere. Orders are general, not iron clad. There’s an ability which negates this in the levelling system. At lower levels, the manoeuvrability of your pilots is awful and sometimes creates a looping fight where they keep failing to get into a position for a basic shot. Stick with it though, things improve significantly as those experience points go up.
Many of the missions have optional objectives, and sometimes you’ll be let loose in a system to pick up a few side quests at your leisure. Once the mission is accomplished, it’s off to the shops to spend the loot and kit out your ships, pick a new skill from the levelling tree, and select a new mission. There’s over 30 of em, spanning patrol runs to huge battles so there’s plenty of content.
