The Definitive Edition ... Almost.
Absolutely had a blast playing through this again, reliving my time as a kid on the nintendo 64. I was really excited at first, but then the camera... Oh dear, the camera. Any time I tried boosting or accelerating the camera would fall way behind the ship, rendering it unplayable. Even pressing f1 to set camera behind the fighter stopped working. I almost gave up on the game for good, until I found some fixes which I'll share here. 1. Launch the game in compatibility mode to get your controller binds working. You will have to suffer through really slow menus, but only once, as once your controller is bound to joystick controlls, you're good. 2. CAP YOUR FRAMERATE. Vsync is not good enough, for my playthrough I used the NVIDIA app to limit the game to 60 frames, and my issues went away. Pressing f1 would now lock the camera behind your ship properly. Y-wing levels suffer slightly, however, because the camera in this position is too close to use the bomb crosshair, and using a further away camera re-introduced the falling behind issue. I played at 60, ymmv, I did not try 30 but it may help. Y-wing issues aside, it was a great romp, and really nice to play this absolute classic at a smooth framerate and high resolution. Fixing controller support by default and fixing the camera (especially the camera) is something I really hope comes in the future, but that's unlikely. If you played this game as a kid, like old school star wars, or like arcade flight sims in general, get this.
