Description
It is a time of great rejoicing in the galaxy. Luke Skywalker, with the help of Wedge Antilles, has blown up the Death Star. But there is little time to celebrate. The mighty Empire is gathering strength for a determined, all-out assault on the Rebel forces.

To save the Rebel Alliance from this Imperial onslaught, Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles have assembled the Rogue Squadron, a group of twelve of the most skilled battle-tested starfighter pilots. You will fly into battle as Luke Skywalker, to engage in intense, fast-paced planetary air-to-ground and air-to-air missions ‒ dogfights, search and destroy, reconnaissance, bombing runs, rescue assignments, and more.
  • Take on the Galactic Empire in X-wings, Y-wings, A-wings, V-wings, and snowspeeders.

  • Prove you’ve got what it takes against a slew of the Empire’s best and baddest, including AT-AT walkers, AT-STs, TIE fighters and more.

  • Test your flying skill through extraordinary environments ‒ over water, through canyons, deserts, and volcanic regions.

  • Astonishing 3D details include real time lighting and special effects (explosions, smoke, engine glow, tracer fire and more).

Great dogfighting. Works in GNU/Linux.

I had the N64 version of this and loved the feel of the aerial combat, especially the ability to loop-de-loop to get behind an enemy on your tail. I finally bought the GOG download despite the warning from GOG that it would not work on my Debian GNU/Linux machine. Given that several of the reviews here say the game is garbage in Windows 10 and requires workarounds, I didn't have high hopes for an unsupported platform like Debian. Fortunately, my worries were mistaken. I downloaded it directly — instead of through Galaxy — and ran it under WINE 4.12 on Debian 10: it's perfect as far as I can tell. My bluetooth playstation gamepad was even detected and works properly (with rumble!). Other than mapping the controller buttons where I wanted them, there was no extra setup or configuration needed. There were some spurious warnings during the install, but they can be safely ignored. The game seems about the same as I remember it, although the 3-D models haven't held up so well in the decades since this was released. It would be nice if the GOG version had newer models with subdivided surfaces and higher resolution textures, but I'm satisfied with it. Quirks: some ships that should require unlocking are available from the start, such as the Naboo Starfighter. I feel like this wasn't a good choice as it makes some of the earlier levels too easy. Also, one time I accidentally got the game into red-blue stereovision mode somehow. I remember there was a cheat code for the N64 that did that, but it happened when I used alt-tab to switch to a program on my other monitor and then switched back. I tried to reproduce it, but couldn't. Would I recommend this game despite its age and low-polygon models? In truth, what I love about this game is the way it *feels* when I'm playing it: I zoom and swoop through the air just as I do every night in my sleep. It feels both completely natural and exhilarating. So, yes, if you ever dreamt of flying, you should try Rogue Squadron.

A still enjoyable classic

Despite having a few camera issues and occasional crashes, SW:RS3D is still a fun game. Graphics are old but are still nice enough. I'm not a huge fan of spaceship based shooters, or even Star Wars spin-offs, but there is something about this game that always made me like it. I had a pirate copy back when it was a recent game, but I never finished it until now. And it's playable on Windows 10 with a Xbox One controller. I recommend downloading dgVoodoo to play it in higher resolutions, making the game look slightly better.

Support controller & camera (Windows 10)

Today (6th Mai 2025) I just did the configuration on two different Windows 10 computers, which worked perfectly for me: 1. Install the game to "C:\Rouge_3D". 2. Do right click on the new desktop-icon. 3. Activate the compability mode and change it to "Windows 7". Now get "JoyToKey" from the internet, which connects controller-button-inputs to keybord-inputs. You can do the configuration like you want. (Don't forget ENTER, ESCAPE to navigate through the main menu and I would also suggest to add F1 and F3 on your controller, so if there are any problems with the camera, you can just put it back behind yourself. "Numblock 0" is normal weapon fire and "Numblock Enter" is secondary weapon fire.) Once you have done all settings, you will have the best version of the game with high resolution and frames per second. I hope you will now enjoy the classic game.

Works and is hella fun

Never owned this before GOG, so no rose-colored glasses. The game is a solid product of late 90s gaming. Simple to learn, takes skill to master. Presentation is spot-on for a Star Wars game and honestly... it is just hella fun. The single bug I encountered: about ONCE a level your camera might zoom out (happens when thrusting). Just hit your camera button (8 in my case) once and you're good. Never happened to me twice a level. I am not sure if the troubles users reported years back are patched now or not... All I CAN say is I'm running this on Win 10, no trouble. Installed with Galaxy, no trouble either. The ONLY fiddling you should do: UNcheck any compatibility modes from Rogue Squadron.exe and ROGUE.exe. That's all it took to get my PS4 controller working. Then in game click "set default" if the buttons are not filled in, yet. That's it. Great game. Would buy again even without a sale

Good game, holds on well but...

It was a pain to get it starting.... First, thanks for all the tips in the reviews- mine won't start- what I did: Download the game and install it manually- not through GOG Galaxy. For controls: simply press on default at the ingame menue. Dude, if I knew earlier... It's really a good game. Nice Soundtrack and immersion, great levels and design. It definitely comes after X-Wing and Tie Fighter as my most favorite Star Wars game.
