Console style fun

This was solid, enjoyable fun, but probably not the 5 stars that everyone seems to be putting. 3.5 would be most accurate. I'm used to computer based FPSs from recent era - lots of freedom, multiple ways to complete a task, etc (think Deus Ex, or Farcry), and this is almost the opposite - at times, it feels almost on rails as those old console shoot-em-ups with the plastic guns. The main challenge is replaying a set piece multiple times, and conserving enough ammo to the next pile of ammo. It's definitely a 'console' approach to an FPS more than a PC approach. I recommend choosing a slightly higher difficulty level than you might do normally. That said, it's a nice bit of fun - it feels like a console game for beer on the couch, no thinking necessary. It's well put together, it's entertaining, and hard to stop playing since it's so well paced. It's not the longest game in the world (but to be honest, one of the few GOGs that I've actually managed to complete from my library, since I normally buy for replayability.) The squad camaraderie is nice, though often where to put the squad members is less tactical and more "oh, there's a snipe spot there, better put someone on it and get their back." Also, I have zero interest in Star Wars I-III, so I wasn't sure we were the good guys till the final cut scene. Maybe if you're really into Star Wars it'd bump this up a couple of stars.

"Times have changed."

This is one of the few games that focuses nigh-solely on the 'Wars' part of the STAR WARS title. In so many others, you're a Jedi, a Sith, a force user or just some rag-tag drifter caught up in something big. And a whole lot of Light Sabres and Force Powers, and 'things you do not understand.' In this, the things you don't understand are that way because they're on a Need-to-know basis, and as a soldier, even if an elite one, you're not one of the ones who need to know until your superiors deem it pertinent. You have no force powers, or light sabres, or anything mystical like that; the first time you actually see a Light Sabre is lying next to a dead Clone, prompting a short monologue from your character that explains exactly what this game is: "An elegant weapon, from a more civilised age, huh... well guess what; times have changed." You don't seek to find answers to elusive questions about the Force of the Galaxy. You seek your objectives, with every intention of achieving them without fail. You command your subordinates to help you achieve those objectives, and the only questions you ask are the ones you need answered to help you achieve those objectives... you don't ask why, in the grand scheme of things. That's not your job. Your job is to cause chaos and get things done, and this game handles that beautifully; you and your men are soldiers in an overarching war, and though you're important, you're not at the centre of the galaxy. But you can damn well leave your mark in it as you take the fight to the enemy. Highly recommend this game if you want a Star Wars game that doesn't focus on the mystical aspects of the universe, and more on the Wars that ravaged it, and the Soldiers, who had no force sensitivity to speak of, that helped bring about the greatest changes in the Galaxy.

An epic classic.

Fantastic storyline for Delta Squad. Although they are canon themselves, this game is not but is still great for Star Wars fans and anyone who likes tactical FPS games. If you have ever wanted more story focused on the Clones, Republic Commando and the Clone Wars Animated series is what you want.

Great underrated Star Wars game

I had this as a teenager on Xbox and loved it, forgot about it, and then found it on GOG as an adult and the game still holds up. I always thought this was a hidden gem in the Star Wars universe and never understood why it didn't get more love. To me, the tactical element is what makes the game. You execute maneuvers like door breaches, take control of turrets, and assign tasks to your squad mates by clicking on icons above objects in the landscape you can interact with. It's super intuitive and keeps the game fast-paced while still giving it another layer of depth. There's a bit of a team management side to it because you have to make decisions on the fly about what the squad will do, cover squad mates in vulnerable positions, and keep an eye on their health. While you can do individual tasks yourself, you need your squad mates to survive and progress. All the other stuff is good, the graphics hold up surprisingly well (granted I'm playing on pretty old hardware) and the heads up display feels really engaging. The dialog is a little canned and I kind of like it. You really feel like you're in the shoes of an elite clone trooper and there's a sense of urgency to clear out one objective and move on to the next. My only complain is that it's shorter than I'd like (I beat it in about a week's worth of playing every night) but the story is great and it achieves exactly what it sets out to do: bring an engaging, tactical perspective to the Star Wars universe.

A unicorn in retrospective

You would think having a thematic war, one of the biggest of your fictional universe would spawn a lot shooters based on it. Aparently Lucas Arts didn't since this is the only FPS single player that the clone wars have. (EA Battlefront 2 doesn't count) This is why this game is so revered? No, it have its own merits. You control a team of clone commandos of 4 where you are the leader. It's not as complex as a raimbow six game nor as a special forces simulator. But is fun, that is in the end what matter to games, each member is a specialist in something (not much as one action) the music keeps the tension and the levels are varied enough to keep your attention and go trough, even when is a short game that can be finished in a day. Sadly overall is a testament of what could have been the potencial of the fps based on the clone wars more than a standalone game.
