An Unparellel Star Wars Game

Many years ago I bought this game, shortly after it came out (2005). Since then I have repeatedly reinstalled and had a run through of it and has always been fun every time I did. This is one of the most unique Star Wars titles that we unfortunately wont see a sequel or a similar game in development. Ill head through the Pros and Cons The Pros: -Solid story. Very engaging plot that takes you through different settings and are well developed. -Every character in your squad, including yours, is engaging. They all have great personalities and are distinct. They all play a vital role and are not regular soldiers. -Your squad is capable of handling themselves, taking orders effectively, saving your skin as well as others competently. The AI is done well -Great enemy diversity that you come across, from droids, trandoshians to geonoshians to scavenger robots. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses. -A unique arsenal you can wield, as well as mounting turrets and other defensive weapons. -The missions are tense and can prove to be a challenge -Visually stunning to this day The Cons: -Rare AI frustrations -Could have had a little more weapon types. -Single player story only, lacking some custom missions that could provide replay-ability To sum it up, this is a one of a kind Star Wars games that stands out completely from the rest. The take on the FPS style squad based combat is executed perfectly and this will be a gem in your collection We can only hope a continuation of this series will be-fold in the future

You remember it being better...

This game can be very fun if it works, and most of the time it doesn't. The game has always been praised for its team combat, but that is definitely viewed through downright opaquely rose-tinted nostalgia goggles. ▲ The music is fantastic and seamlessly blends official and original songs ▲ The campaign follows the movies very well without taking many liberties ▲ Good characters. ...Well, it's just TMNT. 38 = Leo, 07 = Raph, 40 = Don, 62 = Mike ▼ Horrendous PC port. The only thing that works without third party fixes is that the game kinda runs ▼ Inexcusably atrocious friendly AI. You can stand in place for 10 seconds with your entire squad around you and an enemy next to you and they will not attack the enemy. Even a "focus fire" directly targeting the enemy has a hard time coercing your squad mates to attack the enemy. You will play a lot of the game without ammo because you will be the one killing the majority of enemies. ▼ The AI's inability to find targets to attack is exclusive to friendly AI. The enemy has no problem targeting and attacking your squad. ▼ Focus fire command has pinpoint precise input, so it's difficult to engage it accurately with fixed mouse control, and unreasonable to engage with vanilla control. Focus fire can also be cancelled with that same command so you can't even spam the button to get it to stick. ▼ Search & Destroy order does nothing of value since your squad fails to attack enemies they meet ▼ Squadmates sometimes get stuck on fortified positions and no Move On command can dislodge them. You need to run back to them and manually click the position ▼ Ludicrous bullet sponge enemies. When combined with your team's selective grasp of the chain of command, even a focused attack on one enemy, already weakened by a grenade that makes them vulnerable, can take nearly all of your ammo. ▼ Squadmates have a hard time targeting flying enemies unless placed at designated sniping spots ▼ Melee attack has buffered input

A good old game

This for me is a game that I played as a child but never finished, so I'm glad that I got the opportunity to replay it and finish it. Big thanks to GoG. There's only one area where I wish it was better and that's with the mouse sensitivity. As you'll notice in the main menu, it is very sensitive and unmanageable. You can get around this using the keyboard (arrow keys and space/enter) to then change the mouse sensitivity in the settings, but this will only apply in-game. The difference between 1 and 2 (lowest sensitivity settings) is quite large and neither were great, but I stuck with 2. You can however find other solutions online, but I didn't bother testing them. As far as rating the game itself, it has some flaws, but none of them are necessarily due to it being an old game. You're the leader of a squad with plenty of personality and you really feel that during the game, whether that's through the soldier comms or intense action and soldier movement. The soldiers have different specialisations, but unfortunately this doesn't really reflect in the gameplay as the demolitions expert will comfortably take the sniper position, as will the tech expert, and vice versa. I also didn't make much use of the other commands. The AI generally seems to know what to do in each situation and whenever I found myself using the commands, I didn't notice a big difference in behaviour. It's actually good that you don't have to tell them what to do all the time. There were a few times where I wish they were more aggressive, but that wasn't often. Some enemies are tough to handle like the flying drones. On easy they don't do anything, but on normal they drain your health very fast and it's difficult to deal with them given the sensitivity settings. Same applies to the flying bugs and jumping droids. A lot of enemies seemed to have a bit too much health (on normal difficulty) making combat a bit tedious sometimes, but sometimes it provided an adequate challenge.

Well Worth It

It's just as good now as it was back then when I was in high school. Glitches and all, it's a game I really, really enjoy.
