Favorite SW game aside from Tie Fighter

My favorite game based on the Star wars universe with the exception of Tie Fighter. Yes, it has its flaws, and many consider empire at war to be its successor, but it does have some elements that make it great. The combat on planets/space here are only the units that you bring, unlike in Empire at War which allows for production of units during combat, or at least it seems that way as i see corvettes popping out of space stations. the lack of ground combat is frustrating yes, but after a while in both games (i've owned both and own them again now), i find myself auto combating due to wanting to progress the overarching campaign along. If you like empires at war, this is definitely worth a look, and i've been dying for this game to be added to gog for a long time. Thank you guys!

Glad to have it back!

I sank many, many hours into Rebellion when I was younger, and I'm glad to have it back. I play it on my desktop and laptop when I'm between classes in college. I wrote this review, however, to point out a possible fix to the many people saying the game has graphical flaws. I, too, had the upside down icons and missing color issue. I went through GOG's support desk and saw it mentioned disabling my ATI Virtual Upscale option. Disabling the virtual upscale restored the game to it's original form. I'm running in native 1920x1080, no virtual upscaling, on Windows 10 with backwards compatibility set to "Windows 95" on the REBEXE.exe file and the game is working fine. I hope this helps some people relive the memories of this amazing and fantastic game!

Good game, got it work on Windows 10

For starters, I first purchased this game back when it originally came out. I was so excited when I first heard about it. It lived up to my expectations then and my love for it hasn't waned over the years. There are better strategy games out there I am sure, and Rebellion has its own flaws, but it is both fulfilling and enjoyable. Replay value holds in part because of the two sides a player can choose and because of the randomized starting conditions and character abilities. For those of you with technical issues: I originally installed the GOG version of the game while running Windows 7 and had very few issues. Sometimes it would crash when the combat mode kicked in, but other than that, nothing major. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and began to experience the same graphical problems described on other posts: upside down icons and discoloration. I found that reinstalling the game cleared these issues up. Now the only real graphic issue is the game runs in 4:3 ratio whereas I had gotten used to widescreen. For me, this is not a big issue, I will adjust. Hope this helps those of you experiencing problems.

Not experiencing graphics bugs

First and the foremost reason for this review, I am running windows 10 and I have not experienced graphics problems. Next, I agree with other reviews - that this is a great real time game. No need to repeat other's reviews. Finally, and understand this is the context of liking the game, the only thing I dislike is this. It is too easy to economically gut neutral worlds (sabotage) and similarly if you are losing an entire sector, you can use a fleet to attack production facilities (attack civilian targets) - you've lost the sector anyway so you don't care about sector wide disapproaval. Thus my preferance is to make two house rules on gutting the production of systems (sabotaging neutrals and fleet attacks on civilian targets.)

One of the best Grand Strategy Games!!!!

This game is one of my favorite grand strategy games I have ever played (the Star Wars theme is a major plus). It can be an immersive experience and the best part of the game are the stories you can create with your strategy to dominate or liberate the galaxy. Wanna assassinate Wedge Antilles? Sabotage a Death Star with a strike team? How about building your ultimate legion of Star Destroyers with the ability to rename each ship? This game allows you to do that! If you were disappointed by Empire at War's dumb down grand strategy element, than you'll like what this game has to offer. However this game isn't for everyone. After playing multiple playthroughs of the game, I can see why it was so polarized by gamers when it first came out in 1998. It's very unforgiving to newer players and the game doesn't hold your hand to go over the basics of the game. I had to read multiple guides just to get a grasp of how the game mechanics worked. The UI and message system is also very inefficient. You'll find yourself clicking the game speed to very slow consistently just to catch up with messages you receive and this really intensifies at harder difficulties and bigger galaxies. In other words, you're not playing this game right if your hand doesn't hurt after a long session. The real time space battles aren't very pretty to look at and are mind-numbingly difficult to control thanks to the inefficient UI and camera the game has for those battles. Most of the time I would just auto-resolve them if my fleet had a superior advantage. On a positive note, I did enjoy having my Death Star insta-killing rebel capital ships in one shot in the real time battles. If you are more into real time strategy games, I'd recommend both Galactic Battlegrounds and Empire at War. Rebellion is a very rough diamond, but once you understand the how the game works, you'll appreciate what it has to offer and become immersed by its expanded universe.
