STAR WARS™: Knights of the Old Republic

One of the best Star Wars games and also best RPG games you can play. Even after all these years it still plays well. The core story and game mechanics more than compensate for the now slightly dated graphics. The graphics are nevertheless atmospheric and convey a good sense of place. For those who want to play in widescreen 1280x800 (not supported natively by the game) the GOG version is the best one to get as it supports the necessary mods to get 1280x800 working. Looking at a lot of the other reviews here, I see two contrasted opinions, hostile to one another: either this is the greatest SW game ever, or KotOR 2 is. The truth is, neither of the two games is the greatest one ever, because there's no such thing, but the design priorities of the two games are very different, and each one has its audience. The second criticism that I have of a lot of the negative reviews is judging KotOR's mechanics and gameplay based on modern RPG standards. That approach is basically useless for a review of a 20-year old game. You have to take the context of the time when the game was made, into account, and I would venture to say that this game is quite good by the standards of early twothousands. That being said, KotOR is basically a video game adaptation of "The Hero with a Thousand Faces", with a Star Wars skin on top. If you like the classic, standard Hero's Journey, and if you like SW, chances are you will find something enjoyable in this game. Since i played Mass Effect before this it was like a jump back to the past at the roots of one of the best sci-fi series we now have. Having only recently started playing on PC, i never had the opprtunity to play it and i missed quite a lot. Its a damn fine game and demonstrates Bioware character development quality. No spoilers: the story in itself is decent. Nothing as groundbreaking as some reviews make it sound. What goes into history of gaming is the plot twist tho. From a technical point of view, playing it in 2014, it holds up good. 16:9 works fine, aside from the fade to black in 4:3. On Win 7 64bit i used the fullscreen tip as suggested on this forum and had not a single problem. The movies only crashed the game 2 times and it happened after long gaming sessions. Modded the game with textures and models from Nexus and Moddb without problems. Worth the full price.

Masterpiece, enough said.

The gameplay is a bit clunky in this game. Sometimes I have to save and load the file again to fix some bugs, but other than that the game works wonderfully. Also the story is very interesting filled with good characters. If you love SW you'll love this game because this game sings SW!
