This is the best game of all time for me, the pinnacle of RPGs, even (narrowly) beating Witcher 3 in my list. Everything is perfect - music, characters, gameplay, Star Wars atmosphere, character development, and it aged really well. You only need to add widescreen mod and the community patch. Then get ready for the best story-telling RPG experience of your life!
An absolutely superb role-playing game that succeeds in capturing the wonder and excitement of Star Wars, while still conforming to the requirements of an exploration/adventure game. The game conforms loosely to the Wizards of the Coast d20 Star Wars rules, so you'll see the familiar Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, etc. combinations, skills and feats that D&D players are used to. After creating your main character as either a fighting soldier, cunning scoundrel or resourceful scout you'll be thrown right into the action in the depths of space, and will soon travel to fantastic worlds populated by strange and dangerous creatures. Simple exploration and discovery is a real treat, but the overarching plot is excellent and engaging as well, with twists, surprises and secrets galore. You can recruit a group of heroes and villains to assist you, with two being direct companions at any one time, and each has their own dialogues, interactions with other allies and significance to the plot- one play-through will not be enough to discover everything they have to offer. Finally, the decision to play light or dark side create two parallel major plot lines- you can even start dark and redeem yourself to the light side, or begin a hero and drift into ultimate villainy. This is some of the finest work Bioware ever did... and that's saying something.
KOTOR is in the top 3 of the best RPGs of all time for me... the care for the story, the details, and in general the old&true RPG side of it compared to what goes as "rpg" today (which is extremely linear, simplified, boring/repetitive, watered-down and shallow).
I would really like at least the PC RPG games to go back to their roots (more role play, LESS FPS!! Much more focus on the stories, AND bring back char sheets, inventory, maps, char creation, freedom to decide who your character is and what it wants etc), which are the basis of the "pen and paper" RPGs which created the genre.
The sequel of this title is also quite good and advised, but it felt like a rushed game when you reach some areas with missing content, in my opinion the story of the first one is superior too, that's why all considered I think this first one is better.
If you are a fan of Star Wars you may want to know that both games are also way better than all the last "Star Wars" movies. THIS is what Star Wars should be.
Still, buy the 2nd too. ;)
I think Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) has a lot going for it, but unlike most other people here I disagree with the premise that this game aged gracefully. KOTOR has great story telling, likable characters and tons of opportunities to collect snippets of lore. The area that KOTOR lacks severely in is its world design and the overall amount of graphical assets.
It's really clear that the world design came as a compromise to allow the game to run on ancient hardware. You and your party members travel through small sectors, almost entirely devoid of detail. Many of these sectors consist of 1-3 hallways, with half a dozen rooms branching off (with the exception of dungeons). Every hallway in the game looks the same. Most of the rooms in the game look exactly the same. Most things that your eyes fall upon consist of flat, featureless surfaces. The tiny amount of art assets in this game is painfully evident, and really makes it look like modern unity shovelware.
However this game is not shovelware at all. KOTOR's ugly visage is thoroughly redeemed by its story telling. Although the main quest line is delivered through the old and reliable method of fetch quests, it never really gets stale. At every stage of the fetch quest you'll find compelling subplots and opportunities to advance the sub plots of your party members. Surprisingly, most of these subplots are not even cheesy (subjective). The delivery of the party members' subplots is also carefully paced and encourages you to use them in your party. The main plot is a bit cheesy at certain points, but is nonetheless enjoyable.
Overall the game offers a good experience, hampered significantly by the world design and small number of art assets. KOTOR is definitely worth a fiver. Maybe even a tenner if you're craving star wars.
