KOTOR is really a hallmark of what Bioware is capable of. Even with the somewhat clunky controls and combat style, it still is playable and extremely enjoyable in the new generation era of games. The characters, story archs and in general the universe presented here really adds to our love of this franchise.
I have a weak memory about the game being released back in 2003 but since I didn't have a sufficient PC to play it back then, I just forgot about it. And here I come in the 2024!
First, the story is IMHO very interesting, sometimes a bit suprising poetic SW classic. Even though I feel this black & white wolrdview already outdated, I like it in the game and it suits the SW world. I played the game only once so I'm curious about choosing other options next time.
The battle system felt a bit weird first, but when I got used to it, I really enjoyed the sense of freedom and experimentation in combining the various characters together and looking for an effective team for a concrete quests.
I was rather kindly suprised with the richness of dialogues, where are some options on how to develop the situations, like diplomatic, brute force or even elusion. The decision system is among the most valued things for me in this game since you can play a bit with the Light side / Dark side scale.
The graphics aged extremely well for the game's releasing time. Only problem with the game were the movie shots, which off a god knows reason minimalized the game first and you had to put it to full screen again. Little and insignificant problem, but it could annoying.
Regarding the development of the characters, I decided to go for recommended options in the beginning and in the end it got a little messy since I arranged all the other company buddies to do a dirty work for me and Malak then was a bit hard :-D but it can be solved with some cunning and clever moves.
The only thing which was a bit disappointing was a richness of Taris world compared to other planets later - I would rather enjoy more time in the game and explore every planet in a way that Taris was made (which is sometimes complained about by other players that it's too long, well it's about taste)
In general, I enjoyed and I highly recommend to play the game whether you like SW world or not. KotOR deservers it!
This is one of the best games I've ever played. The storyline is awesome, as is the combat system and the music. There are various ways to approach combat, and you can even avoid it sometimes through conversation, it all depends on what you decide. I've bought it when it was released and was thrilled until the epic finale. If you don't know the plot, do yourself a favour and don't search for it, just buy the game and play, you'll love it.
Graphics are obviously aged (were actually a bit aged by the time of the release already) but this game survived the test of time brilliantly, I still play it from time to time.
It's quite repayable too if you like to see all the available ends.
This game have set the standards for the likes of Dragon Age and Mass Effect (actually I didn't enjoy these two as much as I did KOTOR). Buy it now, you won't regret it! :)
This is an amazing RPG, it has great replayability, I remember I would play it over and over again and never get bored, the antagonist has good character development and the choices you can make are varied and well made.
It truly gave a new light to the star wars universe.
First of all, let's get one fact out of the way. KOTOR 1 and 2 are the crown jewel of the crowded Star Wars gaming universe. It wisely ignores (except as a template for a world) the movies and the expanded universe and creates it's own mythology.
Second of all, the game is definitely a RPG (based loosely on D&D 3 rules) but it is also highly beginner friendly. The combat system isn't perfect but it becomes second nature very quickly. The loot is good but not overwhelming. You have great diversity in who runs with you in your party.
Lastly, the visceral experience of playing the game is like starring in your own Star Wars movie. That isn't just hyperbole. When you whip out your lightsaber or light things up with your blaster it FEELS good. Every swing animation hits you perfectly. The choices you make push you to the light and dark side (as would be expected). There are multiple solutions and outcomes to most quests.
Ultimately, Star Wars was always the closest Sci-fi ever got to being pure fantasy, and KOTOR and it's sequel stands proud among the giants of the genre. It's not perfect, and some may say it's water-down and too simple, but don't listen. This is not only a all-time great game, but a perfect stepping stone into a myriad of wonderful worlds in the CRPG universe.
