Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II includes Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II and Star Wars™ Jedi Knight - Mysteries of the Sith.
Whatever path Kyle Katarn chooses will change the face of the galaxy forever.
Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II continues the story of Kyle Katarn, a young mercenary that successfully infiltrated the Empire, as he embarks on a quest to discover his past and learn the ways of the Jedi. In order to protect the galaxy Katarn must confront his father's murderers, led by the Dark Jedi Jerec, and stop them from obtaining the mysterious powers of a "Valley of the Jedi", a focal point for Jedi power and a Jedi burial ground. As Katarn embarks on his journey to defeat the Dark Jedi he must also shape his destiny, by choosing to follow either the light side, or the dark side.
Mysteries of the Sith
Kyle Katarn's adventures continue five years after the events in Dark Forces II. Invading Imperial forces advance upon a quiet Rebel outpost, interrupting Kyle's trianing of a brave new Jedi, Mara Jade. First introduced in Timothy Zahn's award-winning Star Wars™ novel, Heir to the Empire, Mara Jade combines her experiences as a smuggler and Emperor's Hand with her apprenticeship as a Jedi Knight. Mara's training will continue in the field as she makes use of four new weapons and five new Force™ powers to secure supplies for the New Republic. Meanwhile, Kyle pursues what he believes to be his destiny as he searches for secret treasures in an ancient Sith temple. Will you uncover the Mysteries of the Sith?
The GoG version works better than the steam one (Which I could make work but wasn't able to change resolution). This game is old, looks old, but man it feels GREAT. I highly recommend to give it a shot. It's a great star wars Story.
4 stars is for DFII. MotS is 2 stars.
Dark Forces II:
PROS
+ Large, varied levels with lots of verticality
+ Good soundtrack
+ Interesting weapons
+ FMV cutscenes that are so bad they're good
CONS
- Frustratingly unreliable lightsaber, but it is satisfying if you manage to clear a room unscathed
Mysteries of the Sith:
PROS
+ Updated engine with coloured lighting
+ New weapons including a sniper
+ Explores more of the Extended Universe
CONS
- Confusing level design that gets worse as the game progresses, with the paths forward being extremely obscure at times
- Second half of the game is full of cheap enemies that can kill you in 1-2 hits
- The Sith have nothing to do with the story until the final 3 levels of the game
- Kyle has a different voice actor, cutscenes are pre-rendered in-engine cinematics
Along with Grim Fandango, this game is probably the jewel in the crown of LucasArts' last golden year (1997-98). Sure, the character models are comically blocky -- this is a first generation 3D title, after all. What you also get is level after level after level of magnificently realized environments that offer up as good a blend of intense action, exploration, and puzzle solving as any FPS yet made.
There's a charming original trilogy feel to DF2's storytelling, characters, and overall presentation. From the moment you get your first glimpses of Nar Shaddaa's cavernous abysses, steep angles, and hordes of bounty hunters all out to get you, the world really comes to life. The game does a great job of subtly easing you through the plot via a succession of levels that always feel connected to what you just accomplished and where you're trying to go next. Instead of bland key hunts, you're often tasked with tracking down inventory objects that allow you to solve puzzles, which range from intuitively easy to fiendishly difficult (though the latter types are thankfully rare).
You're also given a handy arsenal of weapons that offer inspired twists on the genre staples while remaining true to the Star Wars universe. (And then there's the concussion rifle, which is utterly unique and just plain awesome.) Unlike Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, the weapons here aren't immediately useless the moment you get your lightsaber. And even once your Force abilities have reached their maximum, allowing you to do cool stuff like jump hundreds of feet in the air, pull weapons out of your enemies' hands, or dish out lightning, you're still far from invulnerable.
I could go on and on. If you're a fan of Star Wars games, buy this. If you're a fan of good shooters, buy this. If you're interested in the (de?)evolution of PC games, buy this. A stone cold classic from LucasArts in its prime. Thanks to GOG for making this game available in all its original working glory.
The main game is a great FPS with an emphasis on gigantic architecture. Great ambiance. The levels are huge and maze-like but they are fair. Gun fights are fun but on the other hand The lightsaber fights did not age well.
Saddly the expension is not very good, most of the levels are unbalanced, unfair and poorly readable.
The big problem is that the game do not really works out of the box anymore. You'll need some unofficial patches. This game is a great candidate for the GOG Preservation Program or a remaster
GOG did it. JEDI KNIGHT WORKS! It runs on fullscreen, with no weird colors and screenglitches. And its the complete package, so...
THANK YOU GOG! (Again)
The game itself:
It will not surprise you like "OMG!!!!" - but it will entertain you a LOT! JK is a solid and really well done, good shooter, set in the StarWars Universe. Its really good, you can´t barely do something wrong with it.
If you like StarWars, or at least Sci-Fi, this game is for you. And for like 6 $ - it´s totally worth it.
