Neither Armada (1 or 2) function with windows 7, 10, or 11... multiple clean installs and multiple VMs (even tried via wine on a linux install which ironically had got it to work the best of them all if only 15mins between crashes).
Menu's will not render, game crashes on load.
Can NOT patch this version with mods as the RDNA fix screws everything over.
It's a very good game though, but better to buy on ebay.
I played this as a child 20 years ago and fell in love, with RTS games, this one was made with so much love it is conforting to play it again.
Long campaign and a good story will get you playing this game. It was very hard to find until now that it was relaunched, Thank you GOG!
First off, I have issues getting the game's display to work while using in-game menus even after extensive work looking at the support forums. Even with all that, I still play the game a lot, and that speaks volumes about the game's design, replayability, and fun factor. The game plays beautifully and smoothly without any problems once the match begins.
The original Armada was a great game and this sequel has many improvements fans wanted to see at the time like newer ships, weapons, races, and features to boost the RTS experience. I personally love both games and have a hard time deciding which one I like more. Fans of the original game beware that the mechanics in this game are a tad different and come with a learning curve. However, once you get used to the game's somewhat-new mechanics you'll have a blast.
All the different playable races have their advantages and disadvantages, and you feel that your skills are tested when you play as a new race you haven't played before. There's enough variety here you'll find a race you enjoy playing the most. I love the voice-acting in this game, and each race has its own distinct voice-overs that help give you the Star Trek experience.
Bottom line--if you're a fan of the original Star Trek Armada you have more of the same here (in a good way) with some adjustments to make it a fun experience.
The Good:
- More races to choose from than the original, you can now play the Cardassians and Species 8472 which is pretty cool.
- More ships to build and choose from than the original, the smaller shipyards now produce about I believe 8 ships, as opposed to 4 in the original. The larger shipyards produce around 5-6 ships as opposed to 2 in the original.
- More special abilites especially with the ships that are added, I really like the Borg Tactical Cubes.
- The warp speed effect can allow your ships to travel across the map much faster so this is helpful if you're impatitent with unit movement. The effect can be turned on and off.
- The game generally seems better at handling larger groups of units, and path finding is moderately better but still not great. You can select up to 16?(maybe 20) ships now instead of only 8 for a fleet.
The Bad:
- The memory leak / crash bug from the first game is still here, it does take longer to happen but it's still there. So save your game often or else you'll lose it.
- The graphics for the ships just don't seem as good as the first game, the ships seem less colorful and detailed to me, but maybe I'm wrong.
- Thought the Borg were overpowered in the first game, well now they are even more so. What's worse than a Borg Cube that can easily assimilate your ships? A Borg Cube that also has the shields of a Sovereign class or Romulan Warbird. To summarize, they made it even easier for the Borg Cube to gain other races' technology.
- Even more technology research, something I didn't find the most fun in the first game, so they added more.....
So overall, it's not terrible, if you own and thoroughly enjoy the first game stick with that unless you are rather forgiving with changes.
