Ugly graphics, great music, great worldbuilding, good gameplay and epic story, exactly how I remembered it.
I remember playing it on windows xp, back in 2008(game is from 2002) and playing this game for hours, and now? This game doesn't even need nostalgia to look good.
Graphics:yep, they got quite ugly quite quick, yet it has some charm to it.
Gameplay:rts with great resource mechanics mixed with tpp if you want, tho it doesn't add much.
Story: can't say much without spoiling anything, tho i give it solid 8
Buy,wait for discount or avoid like fire?
Buy it, just do it and immerse yourself in this game for a loooot of hours
A great game. For me it feels like a mix between Warcraft 3 and Neverwinter Nights. The platinum edition has roughly 150h of gameplay in it, so great bang for your buck.
Do read up on character builds beforehand. Your points are limited and (without mods) not respeccable.
This game tries to combine 2 Genres--RTS and RPG. it was one of the early Warcraft III clones, and I've spent a lot of time playing it.
The RTS part is really fun, considering that you have six races to play with (your choice--or, in some cases, the map's choice), and none of them are really self sufficient--each "side" (Ligh and Dark) is evenly matched, but individual contributing races may not be as well balanced against each other, and this requires smart resource management and planning.
The RPG part is more of a hack and slash, which can get tedious at times
The original is good, but as some others have mentioned, the campaign gets fairly generic, especially as you run out of side quests. The last few maps (the game revolves around the concept of travelling around islands, which are all that's left in the world, and once you've been to one, you can return to it anytime--at the price of losing everything you've built on your current map) really slide towards hack and slash with your avatar and his party, which gets seriously tedious.
THe first expansion (Breath of Winter) is much better, with far more interesting quests and storyline.
The second expansion starts of very strong as well, with a lot more focus in quests given to character interaction and introducing a number of "side challenges" (like playing a variation of chess against a god), but towards the end it becomes a real hack and slash grind again.
overall though, it's an enjoyable experience if you are looking for something that's like Warcraft III, but with some originality.
Spellforce has amazing potential and from the get-go you'd think it can certainly live up to it.
However it's the little things that take it down.
Quite simply it's boring and not that well designed.
Here's a list in no particular order:
The voice acting is pretty bland.
Fog of war resets everytime you leave area(which I found very annoying).
Level design could use a lot of polish.
Story could use a rewrite.
RTS component could use an overhaul starting from the design of mechanics/races right down to how the engine handles the RTS play.
RPG controls were on the right track, but still need a fair bit of work.
How the engine handles certain things like aggro could use a bit of work.
And finally:
Devs could benefit from a bit of brains so that they realize when to stop adding things and start making the things that are there work together well so that what you get is a finished game, not an ad-hoc mix of different mechanics. They quite simply bit off more than they can chew.
As an avid RTS fan my dream was always to get down there and do shit with my little cannon fodderlings. Thank you Spellforce Platinum, I salute thee from a 3rd person perspective.
