As good as it gets

Now this is a real classic in my opinion. I fondly remember playing this during my last 2 years at the university. It was great to build up an entire base and try turtling the whole line of enemies. Usually after a good hour my defenses where up and running. Wave after wave of enemies came running towards my base and none entered. So i left it running sometimes while studying to gain the experience. So for me it's quite nostalgic to play it again after allt his time. The story is good , the patches did the trick providing more bindstones , less bugs , faster performance , ... . Most people say its a unique mix between RTS and RPG. Sure , but not the only one. Warcraft 3 and LOTR for exemple. But this one stands tall above all the others i've played so far. Great game.

A model of gameplay

Spell force, it's a unique gameplay, a mix of RTS and RPG. Okay, is that all ? Yes and no... Many games claim to be a new model, a mix of genres, and mostly fail. Not Spellforce. The universe is rich, possibilities are huge, and the progression is very good. You discover new opportunities all along the game - with the new races you can control), your main character can be developed in many different ways. You really have new challenges all along the game, there is no feeling of repetition (the level design and monster design are really good too). Yes, the end of game is a little bit disapointing, but you will really have good time with this game - especially for this price. I was very disapointed by the add-ons because of the lack of "progression" as there is in the main game - when a part of the game is to discover what you can do. Theses add-ons assume you already know the game pretty well and just offer you new maps, but the gamer do not have the real feeling of playing something new. Most maps are good, but as a whole it lacks the immertion of the main game. But you wll buy it for the original game, won't you ? :)

Nearly Perfect RTS/RPG crossover!

More complex han the successor Spellforce 2. But...I would like to see here on GOG the german version as it has very good voice over. Hey GOG-team...is there a chance? ;-)

Good, but only if...

It's a very good game. Very unique mix. I have spent many long days playing it, few years ago, and i love it. It will keep you entertained for a VERY long time. Why only 2 stars? Well... Spellforce does NOT support any "high" resolution, or widescreen resolution. Also, according to CD Project curtomer service it is NOT compatible with i3/5/7 processors. If you have an i3/5/7 processor you will have two options : 1 - Constant crashes 2 - Game will not launch at all I wish that info was included in the game description before i purchased it. Hope it helps,

Mediocre at best

The promo price of $4 was hard to pass up and I'm glad I didn't spend the full $9.99 on Spellforce at a later time. The blend of an RPG and RTS was an interesting twist, but for me the experience rang hallow as the game progressed beyond the early stages and I found myself caring very little for the world, the lore, and my own character's development. There are horrible balance issues in regards to game mechanics that become increasingly obvious as you progress further. Mage and rogue types eventually become useless while the strength/stamina hack and slash fighter build is overpowered the entire way through. Companions are uninteresting and are mostly cannon fodder for the dungeon crawling aspects of the game which requires no strategy beyond point and click. The loot is unvaried and uninteresting. I only found one weapon the entire game I thought was unique or even worth getting. The RTS element is deceptively entertaining at first but there is no tangible variety in the six playable races beyond personal preferences of what you think is visually pleasing. Enemies come in easily dispatched waves, exhibit no tactics beyond just mauling whatever they run into first, and you can pretty much kill any monster or mob by just kiting them. Resource management is a joke as everything is close at hand and requires no aggressive decision making on the part of the player to acquire new strongholds or outposts. There is generally only one, maybe two, entrances to your base and can easily be walled off with buildings causing all the laughably easy mobs to be funneled down into a kill zone. Overall the game was too long and I my first mistake was probably choosing to be a Heavy Combat Arms strength/stamina build as playing as anything else was grueling and felt like punishment. The RTS element isn't bad but extremely weak in comparison to pretty much any other RTS of its era. Ultimately I recommend only buying and playing this game during the promotion period or if you've exausted all other alternatives in both the RTS and RPG genre.
