Description
SpellForce 3 - The perfect blend between RTS and RPG!

It is the year 518. The rebellion of the renegade mages, known as the Mage Wars, has been quashed by the Crown. However, it was a Pyrrhic victory: Whole regions have fallen into anarchy, refugees roam the lands in search of shelter, and a mysterious, deadly plague called the “Bloodburn” has arisen and is spreading rapidly.

In times like these people cling to any sign of hope they can find. The Purity of Light, led by a charismatic man called Rondar Lacaine, claims that mages are the source of all misfortune – and that only the second coming of Aonir, the father of all gods, will return Eo to its former splendor.

The story takes place before the acclaimed SpellForce: The Order of Dawn.

Features:

  • Innovative Mix: Unique gameplay blending RTS and RPG naturally together
  • Create & Customize: Create your own hero and choose between distinct skill trees
  • Build to Fight: Raise your own army and fight epic mass battles
  • Epic Storyline: Immerse yourself in a rich world - Unravel the secrets behind the current situation in Nortander. Explore Eo, a fully-realized world filled with interesting characters and heart-wrenching stories.

  • Experience an epic tale: Enjoy a fully-voiced 30+ hour campaign on your own or with friends in the campaign coop mode. Face opponents of all skills in the online battles.
  • Multiplayer: Strong multiplayer component with various modes - Compete against each other in the PvP and Domination mode or play cooperative either together on one faction or classic where everybody plays a faction.

Gets worse with every patch

I bought this game because it was one of the few games with LAN multiplayer. The original game worked quite fine by connecting directly to an IP address. Multiplayer was fun except of the bugs at the release. However, the connect to IP feature was removed with the Soul Harvest expansion making LAN multiplayer impossible (see https://www.gog.com/forum/spellforce_series/bug_spellforce_3_soul_harvest_real_lan_games_are_broken). With the release of the Reforced edition, it is even not longer possible to play SINGLE PLAYER against the AI without an internet connection in both, reforced and soul harvest. There is just the error message "Network request failed. (unknown error)". There exists plenty reports of this bug at various placed on the internet but the devs consequently ignore them. Even worse, they are lying that there is no DRM and LAN play is possible (see https://www.gog.com/forum/spellforce_series/spellforce_3_lan_or_galaxy_only). But this is exactly DRM at its worst! Now, there is a free to play online PvP edition on Steam so this was just wasted money as I do not care about the campaign. If you really want to play the game, use this edition.

Fun, but disappointing

GoG doesn't allow long enough reviews to really cover the good and bad parts, but the biggest problem with this game is the balance. As with previous Spellforce games, this is an RPG/RTS hybrid. Usually this means exploring an area at least partially with a small group of heroes, then at some point starting a big fight and having to build up an RTS base. The problem is that after the first few levels, your heroes are so powerful that the RTS part is irrelevant. Some levels can be completed before the RTS part even starts (in some cases breaking the game when it didn't expect that), while in almost all others you can simply march straight to the enemy base and destroy it without ever building a single thing. It's a shame, because the individual parts both work pretty well. There are plenty of complaints about both, but most are about things that are clearly deliberate design decisions rather than objective issues - restricting to 3 active skills so you can't stack tons of buff auras or have to choose between fighting or RTS support skills, for example. Some people will like them and some won't, but either part would work if they didn't fail so badly to work together. The other big issue is that the game wastes time far too much. You're frequently required to walk backwards and forwards across the same areas over and over again. In your home base in particular, you constantly have to cross all the way across two maps and through two loading screens to turn in a quest or craft an item, then go all the way back again. It doesn't break the game, but it does get very frustrating. Finally, the bugs. The game is a year old, but still chock full of them. Most, but not all, of the gamebreaking ones are gone, but there are insane amounts of bugs ranging from copious typos and placeholder text, to quests not triggering properly and monsters failing to spawn. It's a fun game when it works, but terribly balanced and in many ways still feels unfinished.

Not DRM free

Since versus has been integrated into the reforced edition, you absolutely cannot play AI skirmishes without persistent internet. No, it doesn't ask for a Galaxy login, it asks for internet. FCK THQ and this nonsense.

Great game, not on GOG

I really like this game, but with Reforced, the unified launcher doesn't have the level of support that Steam has. What I mean is that the GOG version doesn't download just the campaign files like the Steam version does so it downloads duplicates of all the libraries and core game engine, making the size to host the game 150GB instead of the 62GB the steam one has. It also doesn't detect those other games, without some manipulation of the files on disk.

Great game but needs more development

The game is absolutely gorgeous and packed with lore. Everything is voice acted, and the story line is absolutely amazing so far. The writing reaches down some depth and engages you right away. I love it so far, and I highly recommend it. In every regard the game is a must buy. I will however lay out some major problems I found, which may or may not ruin your experience, depending on who you are. My main problem is that the game should have been developed further. Bugs aren't really an issue, but optimization is a mixed bag. Initially the game runs great. But as the map fills with units, things start getting irritatingly slow. Unit selection clearly needed more work. You can't shift-select. The game is not disallowing it, but it just doesn't work. Everything seems to slow to crawl if I try to shift-select. I still haven't figured out how to create control groups either. I think that's also buggy. Issuing multiple orders also can have a similar effect. The way your heroes use abilities and spells during combat is great, but they limit your space for shortcuts a lot. You get 4 "action groups" and each group can hold up to 3 spells/abilities from each of your heroes. There is an "action wheel" to use all those abilities and spells during combat. It's easily accessible, but they could have made it bigger and accomodated more abilities per action group over all. It's just a bit tedious. RTS and RPG blend is done really well. But I have to warn you, that the RTS element, at least in the initial stages of a map, can be micromanagement-heavy if you aren't used to it. People coming in for the RPG part, might be dismayed. I just suggest you play it on an easier difficulty if you just want to experience the story and play like you would an isometric RPG.
