Description

Sparklite is an action-adventure set in a whimsical and ever-changing land. Battle foes in top-down action using an arsenal of gadgets, guns, and gear. Explore dangerous corners of the procedurally generated world, take down titans of the mining industry, and save the Sparklite!

Everything in the world is tied together by Sparklite... it's the life force of the planet, and the inhabitants have learned how to channel it for their own gain. It can be harnessed, or it can be consumed for a surge of power with grave consequences.

The "Baron" has devised a plot to mine the world’s Sparklite core. He mines Sparklite and burns/consumes it to fuel his powerful war machines, but the pollution from the consumed Sparklite is corrupting the world. Animals have turned to violent monsters, and the environment is rotting away. But the world has a natural defense in its Sparklite core. Periodically, the core causes a Disruption which rearranges the world, setting back the Baron’s efforts. If the Baron can obtain the core, he will gain the power to create a new world where he has ultimate power.

Our hero, Ada, must travel to each zone of the world to shut down its Digsite, lowering the Baron’s defenses so that she can stop him before it’s too late...

Could have been better

From the inspirations and games listed on the store page I expected much more from the game. First I'd like to start with what I found good. The pixel art is beautiful, very colourful and interesting to look at and the soundtrack is great and fits each area of the game well. Mechanically the game is solid: movement and combat feel good the platforming segments don't feel like a mistake was the games fault, etc. and the gadget equipment system is interesting. Here's where the game starts to fall short: The randomisation of the world just doesn't do much, maybe you see a new screen here or there when the world regenerates but for the most part it's pretty much the same every run. The craft-able weapons have very little use outside of the few randomly dotted puzzle items around the world. Going back to the gadgets, while the system is interesting there are only a handful of them to equip and with limited space you mostly fall back to damage and heart increasing items. On to the boss fights: The 4 bosses are just really easy, only have about 2 patterns each and after a few defence upgrades barely scratch you... except the final boss fight which comes out of nowhere with a HP sponge boss with a second phase that's just a mob gauntlet, quite a difficult one at that! Some of the games enemies are really spongy or deal a lot of damage to you and guess which ones got into the final boss fight! Coupled with the fact that there are very few opportunities to heal (consumable healing items are kind of rare to come by and hearts are near non-existent drops) made the final fight just stupidly hard. All of this happens in the span of about a 5 hour playtime and I don't really see much of any replay value here. Maybe it's just me but when you cite Zelda as an inspiration I instantly expect puzzles and dungeons and unique upgrades (that have a use!) I know I'm not supposed to discuss price but at it's current one I just can't recommend this game.

Fun and Great Art Style

A really fun and light game, with some challenge too. I own it on steam and am looking forward to finishing it. I love the art style and a lot of effort has been put into the look of the characters, bosses, and the world. Definitely some nostalgia for games like A Link to the Past, but would be fun for younger / new gamers too!

Short but good

Short roguelite. Combat is a little bland, and end game enemies become a little too tanky. Otherwise, enoyable quick game.

Looks good, plays ok, too short.

This one is a looker, decent music and the controls are ok. Its a rather simple rogue like with bland combat, its like everything was designed to take TIME so that the tanky enemies get to hurt you. You gotta die quite a lot before you can afford better equipment, which makes the game too easy, until, you get to the last area and suddenly enemies become tanks again. Last boss was good looking, but utterly dissapointing and boring. I honestly got annoyed the game suddenly ended after just 5 bosses. So, its not a great game, or a bad one, its just, ok. If you have some time to waste and need a retro game, this one could be it, on a sale mind you!

DIE to save the game

Following happened after 8.5 hours: Got to the final boss, but got blown out of the screen downwards and couldn't get back up to the fight. I had 2 options: 1. close / end the game with task manager (hoping that it has saved at some point) 2. die I chose the first one. Bad move. Even though I have collected all the birds and all equipment, the birds did not get saved, so I 'had to' spend an additional 4.5 hours to 100% the game. Note that if you die at the final boss, you can try again from the beginning of the fight. (If you die anywhere else, you start a new run.) So beware of graphical glitches. I suggest dying after every area is completed. Note that with a new run you also get help / sidequests from NPCs. Otherwise a lovely game, I did get easier with playtime - as it should - but not too easy.
