An Absolute Classic

The Space Quest series has been a long time favorite of mine. Just this past summer I played through all of the games and really enjoyed them. These games have stood the test of time. Their gameplay is slow and antiquated but they are still full of comedic gems and a great storyline. I'm surprised to see that GOG has released episodes 4,5, and 6 first before episodes 1,2, and 3. They are all worth playing through. But, I would have to say that episodes 4 and 5 are the best of the series. Still, I just don't think someone could appreciate the main character, Roger Wilco, without having played at least episode 1. If someone is considering buying this game and hasn't played any of them yet I recommend using a walkthrough from time to time. If you want to try to make it through without one that is great. It's definitely possible, I did it as a kid. But, since the gameplay is rather old I can see someone becoming disinterested if they became stuck at some point in the game. That is why I say just play through the game as a leisurely pace and consult a walkthrough after you are stuck for a while. That way you can finish the games and enjoy the storyline and humor. The only caveat to this is that you should save your game often and definitely try to kill yourself as often as possible. The possibilities of death are some of the most humorous parts of the game. Enjoy these games and appreciate them for what they are.... classic adventure gaming!

Three Gems of Adventure Gaming!

While you should definitely play the first three games first, after you do, don't hesitate to buy this follow-up collection of adventure gaming fun! The best of the series is where this 3-pack begins: Space Quest IV. With an excellent lost-in-space time-travel storyline, a fun mini-game experience (Ms. Astro Chicken), and interesting puzzles to solve, it's got everything that makes the journey worthwhile. This was Space Quest's highest point, which goes down a bit when you play Space Quest V and VI--but not by much. By the time Space Quest V came out, the Two Guys From Andromeda split apart, and you can tell this from the two games that follow. Under the creative control of Dynamix, Space Quest V ends up being a fun, more cartoonish romp that provides fun gameplay and a story that sees Roger Wilco's dream come true -- command of a starship (well, okay, garbage scow, but still a starship!). Space Quest VI, on the other hand, returns to the old ways of Sierra-esque adventure gaming and is very pun-full -- too much, at times, but still fun. In the end, the series reaches its greatest height, but then a schism between the developers brings the series to its eventual finale. If there is another Space Quest, it won't be like this. (Side Note: For those who haven't yet, it's worth searching for the Space Quest VI Demo, as it's actually a prequel to the game with a mini-story not seen in the main game.)

This is why GOG exists

I have been playing the Space Quest series since it was originally released. It holds for me some of the most treasured memories of that time. It reminds me of a time where you were happy with graphics, any graphics. Playing this first on 4 color CGA and then moving to EGA then VGA - and now come some 30 years later, I'm playing it on a gigantic 40" 4k monitor . it is still as good as it ever was. For those new to the series, in a nutshell you play a space janitor called Roger Wilco, and trust me over the course of 6 games (or 2 in the case of thos 4+5+6 pack) you will come to love him like a stupid brother. Go back to a time where everything wasn't handed to you on a silver platter, when you felt a sense of pride and accomplishment at solving a puzzle that was totally whacky WITHOUT resorting to the WIKI. We didn't have Wiki. We had calling up friends and asking "man how did you beat this boss!!??" or "where did you find that dang data cartridge?" We had magazines and hint guides, but there was no instant give me the answer for everything back then, especially when the games were new. Sadly they don't make them much like this anymore. If it had a 10 star rating, it would get 10 stars, simple as I can put it. If you have never played SpaceQuest.. if you have never played it, stop reading this now. Buy it. You're welcome in advance.

Classic Point and Click

The puzzles range from pretty challenging (I'm looking at you SQ6) to fairly obvious. These things are definitely dated and your enjoyment will hinge on how much patience you have for easy deaths and the occasional pixel hunting. Still, if you have the right mindset, they're absolute classics.

I miss roger...

Space Quest games were some of the funniest games I ever played. A janitor becoming a space hero is a funny story of itself. But the narrators nonstop humorous dialog and roger's clumsy and dimwitted ways constantly saving his butt (by accident) are always worth the time. Highly recommended!
