Cannot be played with a controller properly on GoG
The build on GoG is currently rigged with a bug that constantly enable the keyboard inputs as soon as any controller buttons gets released which result in many input on the controller to gets ignored for a short moment (as it switch from controller to keyboard, then back to controller constantly). This happens even without any controller plugged/connected to the PC. (Disconnected my wired keyboard, connected a Bluetooth keyboard, turned said keyboard off and while no keyboard are active, the game still detects the keyboard as actif.)
I'm having an hard time playing this game with a keyboard.
When I first started to play this game I wasn't sure what to think. The graphics are extremely impressive, but I didn't find the storyline all that interesting. I was also immediately put off by two things. #1. The text was a bit small for the screen, so I had a hard time following along with the dialogue. #2. The sound that the main character makes when he walks is extremely annoying. I eventually got used to it, but the developers should have made an option in the settings to turn off the footstep sound. Once I got past these minor issues I really began to enjoy the game. The setting is incredible, the movement is smooth, the music is excellent and the characters are mostly well-developed. The only issue I had with the gameplay was the somewhat confusing controls. I understand what the developers were doing with the secondary weapon and healing items, but I found them to be a bit hard to get used to during tense battles. I'm not sure how I would improve it, but I just thought it was worth mentioning. Otherwise this is a really excellent game to pick up and play. I was going to give it 5 stars, but the problems that I mentioned set it back by one star.
In terms of concept this seems generic. Pixel graphics sidescrollers are common. The setting is generic too, although the pixel art is very pretty, and the animations are nice and it does have its own little personality. But this is a very solid title that distinguishes itself above the rest because of its design and amount of content.
First of all you get a choice of three classes that play different, as well as difficulty options. I chose the hardest difficulty, and this is important in my opinion because I feel it could be boring without the increased challenge. With the mage on hard difficulty, stuff kills you in like 2-5 hits, so I have to focus, and for bosses learn the pattern. Some of the bosses remind me of a Mega Man type of experience. The sensibility is very 4th gen, which is good.
Actually, the game has metroidvania and soulslike elements. You have automatic checkpoints, and 'bonfires' where you can save, fast travel, or heal while resetting the area. You have a dodge button on a cooldown, and a stamina bar that's only for your block button. But there's more going on. You have RPG elements, with levels, quests (including bounties), equipment upgrades, a small skill tree - but there's more. You can find additional skills/spells in the world, and enemies can drop secondary weapons like bombs and throwable hammers which you can also upgrade using materials. On top of that there are five elements you can as you progress which you can seamlessly switch between with the analog to interact with the environment to reach new areas or that you have to manage when fighting certain enemies.
So the game is surprisingly meaty. The first area, which seems like a tutorial dungeon, is actually a real dungeon that took me something like 4 hours to complete. Most games like this have 10-12 hours content, this one easily has upwards of twice that.
Finally, the characters are cute and it tries to be charming, it is, but personally I ignored the story.
There's a lot of great in this game art, music, neat story line. There's some funny dialogue and neat creative touches to the game.
The music and artwork team did a stand up job. Good variety of dungeons, characters and all that.
I'm at 70% completion and the the rising-lava segment has me too frustrated, I think I have to shelve this game for a while until there's a patch?! I've been to the 1/2 mark but I consistently die at the sand barrier ___ | ___ (floor wall floor). Compared to other Metroid / Castlevania games, the game controls need some polish. There's a few spots in the game where you need to be super precise or you die. Its among trickiest game at times I've played with a keyboard.
The controls aren't an issue for 99% of the game. Its usually jumping in precise segments that is the problem.
I'm hopeful there's a sequel or new game from same publisher.
This is a great game, and with a little control polish will be an absolute gem. I very much like the artwork and the music/sound effects compliment the game well. Nice melody.
All the animations, the designs, the mechanics, the variety of enemies and abilities. It's a masterpiece. I find it strange that it isn't more well-known; it should be, because it deserves to be.
