Songs of Conquest

I don't have much to add beyond what many others have already said. The game is essentially a spiritual successor to HOMM3, in many ways - both in its qualities and flaws. On the good side, the game has impeccable and gorgeous pixel art style. The music is extremely atmospheric and matches the style of the game very well. You have a wide variety of units, each with their specific abilities and characteristics, and unique heroes ("wielders") that have a huge variety of builds. But like the game that inspired it, this is a broken game; at least when talking about balance. They're still working on it. Some strategies will have you running over your enemies without them even having a chance to damage a single unit, others that sound perfectly reasonable on paper will have you losing a battle to an enemy weaker than you. For many, figuring out the ideal strategy to crush your opponents is part of the fun of the genre: if you are one of those people, you will love what this game offers. In essence, it is a game with a lot of heart. You can feel the dedication and passion of the developers in every detail of the game, in every character sprite, in every animation of magic, every music, event, etc. If you enjoy this genre, I would say that it is certainly worth taking a chance on.

I'm writing this review three weeks after 1.0 release, having played it a bunch since release and during early access. The TL;DR is that I had fun playing it but I don't think it (currently) has the longevity HoMM has had, and continues to have, for me. The main issue holding this game back for me is that heroes/wielders aren't really that mechanically distinct so I just end up printing the same build whatever hero I'm using, which removes a lot of variety. A specialisation that grants you a single essence point (half of what an average troop would generate for you) isn't going to spark my imagination. I wish they were doubled or even tripled. You could say "no big deal, you can mod that, right?" - and you can't. I checked. Which is a bit of a let down. On the plus side: all these little bonuses clearly matter to the PvP scene which is great, even if it's not my jam; the combat system is fantastic (much better than anything in HoMM); and I like the setting they are building here. I will probably come back for the DLC and I enjoyed the time I had with it but, as it stands, I don't think it is a game I will come back to again and again.

That remains to be seen. It will need more than fancy 2022 graphics and decent gameplay. Apparently it has copied and implemented a lot of elements from the Venerable HOMM very well, but it will never fully match or surpass Heroes3, or Warlords III DLR, until it adds at least 2 major features. 1-A robust Random Map Generator with optional underground tunnels, 2-More Factions. For now, 3rd place in my book after the aforementioned games.

I am a fan of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and I always wanted for some developers to make a game with graphics like heroes 3 and Song of Conquest ...it's my new favorite! I bought the game, didn't watch any tutorial, played my first skirmish against an easy AI and won. I can't wait for Song of Conquest community to grow, to try community maps and have fun. Thank you, you amazing Sweden people!

I got this in early access and I was in love before I knew it. Kudos to the devs for the constant improvements. Get it, play it, love it!
