Description
Enter the world of SOMA and face horrors buried deep beneath the ocean waves. Delve through locked terminals and secret documents to uncover the truth behind the chaos. Seek out the last remaining inhabitants and take part in the events that will ultimately shape the fate of the station. But be careful, danger lurks in every corner: corrupted humans, twisted creatures, insane robots, and even an inscrutable omnipresent A.I.

You will need to figure out how to deal with each one of them. Just remember there’s no fighting back, either you outsmart your enemies or you get ready to run.
  • From the creators of the cult classic Amnesia the Dark Descent.
  • Spine-chilling horror that raises questions about identity, consciousness and existence itself.
  • Mixes stealth, exploration and puzzles into a coherent narrative experience.

Fun and creepy

I got this game for free like 6 years ago and I played it for a little bit and lost interest. Mostly because I'm not a huge fan of avoid-the-enemy-while-running-around games that spiked in popularity around 2010. However, over the past few days, I suddenly felt like playing it again. It's about what I expected. It was fun, but a bit overrated, in my opinion. So, the searching and puzzle solving were a lot of fun. Most of the enemy encounters were pretty freaky, while some were just a pain in the butt. There's a lot of plot-development if you pay attention. If you don't, most of the game won't make sense to you. I paid enough attention to see the ending coming miles away. Most of what I'd heard was how well-done the existential horror was. However, it just didn't do it for me. In fact, I rolled my eyes a couple times. I can't really elaborate, as it would most certainly spoil things. In the end, I see why so many people like the story, even if I didn't. Beware that there's really only one ending. The only big problem I had with this game is that there was no way to review your objective. If there was, it was well-hidden. Had a couple times where I had to wander around aimlessly in order to figure out what I was supposed to interact with, etc. So, if you missed the last thing your character or someone else said, too bad, figure it out! I can say with confidence that if you like games similar to Amnesia, you'll definitely like this. If you aren't big on that sort of thing, in contrast, you should either wait for a sale or skip it.

SOMA - 1st time playing in 2024

Story is good, gameplay is also good. There are some parts where you don't really know where to go or what to do, which is a flaw in design, but it's nothing too big. Good game, captures your attention and you want to know where it's headed.

Novel level writting.

This game must have the best story of any game coming in the 2010s. It's full of reflections in philosophy and science. The characters are very well written. You know this because you can simpathize and care for them. The story at plot and writting level is at novel level. This means it's above movie and videogame level of writting quality. (This is how I measure the quality of writting, which has little to do with the concepts of the plot, but instead presentation of the story and character depth). If you don't know about frictional games, they ressurrected the horror genre in 2010 with The Dark Descent. It also sprouted the walking simulator subgenre and stealth based/no weapon horror mechanic. Comparing SOMA to other Frictional Games titles, I would say this is scarier than The Dark Descent, and at the same level as Amnesia Rebirth, if not scarier. This is due to enemies being more consistent and menacing, compared to TDD monsters that you can easily lose and tend to despawn. It's is worth checking Penumbra 1&2, and Amnesia TDD&Rebirth. In therms of writting (Story, characters) compared to other FG titles, SOMA is the best one, followed by The Dark Descent and then Penumbra 1&2. Rebirth's story made me really mad as I found plot holes that made me dislike the protagonist. A machine for pigs is not worth mentioning and I don't have Amnesia The Bunker. Please send gift.

Awesome story, propably awesome horror

As the title says, i love the story about trans-humanism, human-robot hybrids and all that. Amazingly written, really squeezes all those touchy subjects about converting a human mind into digital data and stuffing it into random machines or not-quite-machines. I cant really give a rating about the horror elements since im not a fan of horror but as far as visuals and sound design go its 10/10. Only reason it gets a 4 and not a 5 outta me is because i got stuck in a segment where i had to do some precise work with a chip and my character kept saying i was missing something untill i realized i was interacting with a little locking mechanism for the chip and not the chip slot itself which would be fine if i didnt have a spooky scary monster shooing me away every time i got near the socket which resulted in me walking back and forth thinking i missed something for days.
