Objective:
Use all means necessary to find and secure four stolen nuclear warheads. Track and stop the terrorist organization responsible for the theft before they can carry out their thermonuclear holocaust. Dispatch as many terrorists, skinheads and enemy soldiers as necessary to complete your mission. Failure is not an option.
Parameters:
10 covert missions take you through the political hot spots of 5 different continents during 26 levels of play. Your arsenal includes ultra-realistic real-world weapons. Enemies are numerous, and a good mercenary knows that wits and intelligence are just as important as guns and ammo.
It runs at an awful resolution and I couldn't increase it without turning off fullscreen mode. The movement is fucking terrible and feels like you're walking on iced, the screen also has a seizure when you touch walls and other objects, stuttering madly with a red box at the top. There was even a bug on the second level which despawned the heli copter and i was unable to progress. It's a shame because I've heard this game is great but this port to GoG is clearly terrible.
In a world where Half Life was King of FPS, Soldier of Fortune flew a bit under the radar, mainly because of its gorey content. Still, it is one of the most fun FPS ever made, only topped by its successor SoF: Double Helix.
I remembered this game as a clear 5, but after replaying it two decades later, I had to deduce 2 stars, here's the details:
Copy-paste plot:
If you're into recycled storylines, then this is your ultimate fantasy! As John Mullins, you're tasked with saving the world from terrorists. Groundbreaking, I know. It's like every other action game, but with even less originality!
Gore galore:
This game offers more blood and guts than a B-movie slasher flick! It's like the devs thought, "Why bother with a creative plot when you can just spray blood everywhere?" If you're into that sort of thing, then by all means, enjoy the bloodbath. If you adore the dismemberment mechanics in the Hitman series, then you'll simply love the body-damage system in Soldier of Fortune. The game's GHOUL engine makes the carnage all the more lifelike. Satisfying, if you're into that sort of thing.
AI on vacation:
The enemy AI in this game is laughably bad. They'll run straight into your line of fire, making it feel like you're playing a carnival shooting gallery. Amidst the chaos, it does occasionally surprise you with a challenging firefight or two. These moments can be quite exhilarating, especially when you're least expecting them.
Vast array of boomsticks:
The weapon selection is like a buffet of destruction! From submachine guns to the Slug Thrower (I still have no clue what it actually is), you'll have an arsenal to make even Rambo envious. Variety is the spice of life, after all!
Unintentional comedy:
The game's absurdity can actually be quite entertaining. So, grab some popcorn and enjoy the ridiculous AI, cheesy one-liners, and over-the-top gore. It's like an action movie so bad that it's actually funny.
For those who played Soldier of Fortune back in the day, it offers a nostalgic journey to a simpler time in gaming. The game may not be a masterpiece, but it's an artifact of its era, and sometimes that's reason enough to revisit it.
It is a fun shooter, where you still have to take a lot of cover and peek around corners. (I WAS PLAYING ON HIGHEST DEFFICULTY). The weapons a a booming sound and the game is not buggy.
There is one level though, that is frustating in the first part, because of a fog veil, with snipers lurking behind. IF YOU KNOW THEIR LOCATION, it can be done.
You have just 2 free saves per level (on highest difficulty), which forces you to play with skill. Story is mediocre, but has one nice thing (The Shop).
I can recommend it to player who aren't whinin' babies and need a bot to play the game for them, or any such disgraces (YES I'm RANTING !!!).
No, for real, have fun the way you want to play!
