Fun callback to 90s racers

Slipstream is a fun, casual racing game that takes much inspiration from many beloved sources like Outrun and Initial D. It's easy to pick up, and it only takes a little time to master. Plus there are multiple game modes to keep things interesting. The best one is easily Grand Tour, which has many of the same mechanics from Outrun. Cannonball is my second favorite mode, where you can customize a race through different tracks you choose, including options for traffic and rivals. Then there's Grand Prix, a familiar tournament-style set of races found in most games. Battle Royale is basically an eliminator where you don't want to be last. Last but not least are your typical Time Trial and Single Race modes. I don't really have anything bad to say about this game. While there is some rubberbanding present, I didn't find it to be so aggressive that it ruined the experience. The only real negative I can think of is that it's not a very challenging game, although these types of games typically aren't supposed to be. Slipstream is a fun, casual racing game that is easily approachiable and I think that really works in its favor, especially given how multiplayer mode is couch co-op only. That makes it easy for people of all ages and skills to try. All in all, I think it's a great game and if you're looking for a retro racer then it's a smart buy. The music is great, the art and animation is excellent, I'm a huge fan of the overall synthwave/vaporwave aesthetic, and it does its job well. It's definitely worth the price in my opinion.

Dream-like racer

Entirely different from modern racing games, tracks feature stunning compositions of great pixel art that make no sense, but looks great while at high speed, and you will be at high speed the whole time, curves are made at just the limit of your turning speed and you can rollback your mistakes (in SP). The tracks are NOT generated, but you can arrange them in a random order for a seamless race, if you're into endless high speed turns there's great replayability, but don't expect gameplay that requires any effort or strategy. I wanted a more relaxed endless race at a decent pace with long sections and consistent artsyle to chill, but it's close enough.

Great Game!

I'm a huge fan of OutRun and love it when an OutClone passes along. Slipstream is very simplified in it's mechanics but enjoyable enough to pass as a fun game. Mainly love that it has a 4-player splitscreen feature allowing you to take up to three friends on a tour of Slipstream's roads. I also found the custom music option interesting which gave me the idea of converting VGM files into MP3 for that Sega Genesis feeling. My biggest and only complaint is that, as a CRT monitor user, there are no 4:3 resolutions available and I'm stuck with a letterbox regardless if I use fullscreen or not. Sadly, this has been the only game that I've come across on GOG that only offers 16:9.

Not Bad, Not Great

Note: the game is unplayable until you've learned about the "drift" and "slipstream" mechanics, so make sure to play the tutorial. You can thank me later. Overall, the game has a nice retro arcade feel to it that might make you nostalgic if you played arcades as a kid in the 80s (and probably 90s too). The execution is good, the game is stable, the atmosphere and music are spot on. So far, I haven't found the game to have incredible amounts of depth so I don't see anyone playing this for hours on end, but if you have a 15-30 minutes break in your day and need to play something quick, it can be a relaxing de-stressor. The races are not that long. Not sure how much appeal the game has for someone who wasn't around to play arcades in the 80s and early 90s. Unlike many other retro-themed indie games, I don't think this one adds much to the source material. I can't help for feel that they could have capitalized on combining the unique feels of old arcade racing games with a modern perspective to add something unique to the table that could have drawn younger gamers in, but they missed the mark there. So overall, this is a nice recollection, but nothing revolutionary and probably a disappointment for gamers that don't have rose-tinted retro goggles to approach the game with.
