Pros:
- great visuals
- writing that combines horror with comedy really well
- one of the best endings that I have seen in a while
Cons:
- decent but unremarkable ost
"Slender Threads" is, first and foremost, concerned with storytelling. All other elements serve the first. Tonally, it skillfully mixes horror with the LucasArts adventure tropes, progressing from a fairly lighthearted to a rather dark tone. It's pretty to look at with its 3D backgrounds. The characters have a great range of emotions and the voice actors are doing a great job. The town the game is set in is also surprisingly expansive – and I've never seen a map that lets you navigate to exactly the spot you want to go to. Good stuff here.
The weak spot of the game, to me, was puzzle design. You're mostly exchanging one inventory item to get another, you seldom follow more than one puzzle chain and you mostly get stuck because you've missed the entrance to another location. But I'm definitely looking out for more from these devs.
A enjoyed my time with this, but was left a bit disappointed with the ending. I loved the art style, the theme, and the general tone. With the exception of one instance where I tried something too early, was told it didn't make sense, and was supposed to know to try it again after triggering something, all of the puzzles were well telegraphed and made sense in world. The game also has a great hint system.
Really, my only complaint about the game was the ending is a bit abrupt and unsatisfying. The post-credit sequence was cute however.
