(I own the game on Steam)
I have a bias here in that I've taken a few trips to Hong Kong and love the city, and I love HK cinema.
However, I think even putting that aside, Sleeping Dogs is a wonderful game. The story moves along at a good pace, the characters have depth and charisma, and each role is very well voice-acted (including some big names like Lucy Liu, Tom Wilkinson and James Hong). The city is wonderfully realised, capturing the essentials of Hong Kong island (including Victoria Peak! Well worth a drive up there).
I actually prefer it over GTA in almost every aspect; it's a map much more suited to traversing on foot (and in fact the game has a very cool on-foot chase mechanic that has you parkouring around, like in a Jackie Chan film), it has a sweet hand-to-hand combat system (albeit very inspired by the Batman Arkham games), cinematic car handling (slightly more arcadey than GTA but ultimately more manageable) and tense gun fights (weapons are accurate and feel weighty, dishing out a lot of damage). It's also one of the few games where progression feels meaningful at each step, both mechanically (via unlocking new martial arts moves) and narratively (as you climb up the triad ranks).
I've replayed it a few times and it's become real gaming 'comfort food' for me. I hope it hits the spot for you too!
A really nice surprise, the current ratings do not lie at all.
Combines elements of Mafia, A bit of Batman, Enter the Dragon, GTA 4, Matrix and probably another 20 other things that I am not recalling/didn't notice. My surprise is that this game is really good and I haven't heard anyone talking about it at the time of its release.
It also uses the best achievement system that I ever encountered, really nudges you to explore the city
Do give it a try, for the price of 3 euros it's really a steal. I do wonder sometimes how GOG makes a profit with these pricing strategies. I mean this in a positive way, thanks again GOG for bringing such great games to us at such prices.
It's a great game, I really enjoyed the combat, reminds me of Arkham series. It's an easy to understand but hard to master. The story is interesting, and it did keep me going. But the side quests, there are few tapes. Some of them are just beat people, hack cameras and then catch the bad guy, while other offer a more light-hearted experience with pretty nice comedy. Have finished the game and you should play it
it is sad that they have cancelled the sequel, but what can we do.
I just found the melee combat to be really, really satisfying and fun. Especially after a little practice, you can get into an amazing flow where you are just thrashing guys and countering everything, taking out 4 or 5 guys in a row, just like in a Kung Fu movie! On top of that, tons of cool environmental interactions, bashing guys against stuff, throwing them off rooftops, into containers, etc. Probably my favourite melee combat in recent memory.
The story is fine, pretty predictable. The open world city is very cool to look at but doesn't have a ton happening on the street level (compared to GTV 4 or 5), but I actually thought the driving was pretty cool, it fits the sort of over the top nature of the action. You can drift around corners at insane speeds, and the game encourages you to bash other cars into oblivion.
I came into this game knowing nothing about it, but it was on super sale and the reviews were positive so I took a chance, and I can say it was absolutely worth it. If you think you might be interested in a kung fu game with some elements of GTA and maybe a touch of the Matrix, this game is worth a shot.
5 Stars, because what this game does well (melee combat), it does brilliantly.
