I just picked up SiN off of GOG. I think that if it had been properly patched, it could have outdone Half-Life, or at least been a serious contender. The main character is John Blade, who's a sort of Judge Dredd type of guy. He goes after Elexis Sinclaire, who's doing some freaky experiments with people and turning them into mutants. Lots of great gunplay, and even the use of fists, which I enjoy in a shooter. My only problem is that for some reason it never keeps my video options intact when I exit and restart the game. Other than that, A plus!
This is a perfect example of one of those games that get overshadowed by the more popular games, in this case it was overshadowed by Valve's Half-Life.
Unlike Half-Life however, you actually get multiple ways to get through some of the levels, like that the very first one with you in the helicopter that can end with either you landing on the roof of Freeport Bank after clearing out the robbers there or the helicopter taking too much damage and having to let you off near the main entrance to the bank.
The story is campy, but in a wonderful manner, and you will be facing not only human goons, but also some of the nastiest mutants ever created by mad science.
Another interesting thing to note is that if you shoot enemies on certain bodyparts, you will actually see the damage, this was almost unheard of in FPS games at that time.
This game has some serious cringe-level writing and ultimately does little to make itself stand out. Even for the time, this is unfortunately one of the lower quality games of its style, and has nothing really to offer that can't be found elsewhere & being done better.
Everything functions roughly well, but the levels are horribly designed and it becomes easy to get stuck, especially given that the answer forward may be something that hasn't been introduced into the game until that very moment.
Everything this game has achieved is done better elsewhere.
It is definitely with a warm heart to say that it's about damn time that Sin is on Gog.
Sin is a ID tech 2 engine game (Modified) by Ritual entertainment which sadly fell to the wayside in terms of exposure, which to those who actually played this game, probably wondered why exactly it didn't get the recognition it deserved...well I'll tell you what happened, Half-Life happened!
Literally 2 weeks after Sin's release, Half-Life was unleashed onto the masses, becoming the must have fps at the time, which is sorta unfortunate. Not to say Half-life didn't deserve it, but the gameplay of HL, definitely doesn't come close to Sin.
Sin is definitely the more "fun" game by a country mile.
While Half-Life did have a pretty unique gameplay style, favoring Atmosphere and more cinematic style of story telling, while feeling like you are taking place in that story, Sin was the counter opposite, favoring more fun gameplay action rather than story.
Basically to sum up this review, here's a bullet point list of what to expect when buying this game:
-Fast and fun Gameplay.
-Good body hit detection mechanic.
-Gibs.
-Funny dialogue and delivery of lines.
-Interaction with the environment.
-certain objectives that change how certain levels play out later on.
-and of course, a hell of a good time.
