like all other comments on this section this series fell into the trap of 3D sadly Gabriel Knight did the same thing they had a great vision with 2D but 3D was a biiiiiiiiiiig mistake i really hope 1 and 2 get a redux like tales of monkey island those were good just as long as they dont try this again
Aside from the usual parodying done in previous titles much of this could be seen as hitting the likes of N64 and Play Station 1 titles. Most visible to me was Ocarina but if the big near empty fields are part of the joke they probably should have lightened the use a little.
Anyone who read the summary of or managed to play 4 would have kind of seen the ending coming.
Wish I could play 4 myself actually.
Whilst it can be hard to define when exactly an era ends, you can, with hindsight, show how the end came about. And so it is, with the 3rd installment of Simon the Sorcerer, we can see the reasons for the endemic failure of the Adventure Game industry as a whole. An adventure game, like a good book, should have interesting locations, realistic characters (for the setting) and an enigmatic storyline that keeps you wanting more. Unfortunately, despite the promise shown in Simon 1 and 2, the 3rd installment fails in all these categories. The underlying reason for this failure lies in the 3D. This extra dimension does not offer anything to this genre and in fact given the sparseness of the locations, contributes to the empty, desolate feel of the game as whole and proves that 3 dimensions don't always have depth.
I wanted to like this game as I did its predecessors, but couldn't so in the words of George Orwell - "2D good, 3D bad".
If you are a Simon the Sorcerer fan then by all means don't miss out on this game. If you are new to the series, start with Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2.
A lot of people don't like Simon the Sorcerer 3D, mainly because of the 3D graphics which were relatively bad even back when the game came out. This was due to delays in releasing the game. I can't remember how long it has been delayed but it was a couple of years IIRC. The graphics were called "revolutionary" by some game magazines when the first screenshots of the game were shown but when the game finally came out it just made people laugh.
The best thing to say about the graphics is that the facial expressions of the characters (yes, they have changing facial expressions) sometimes are really hilarious.
I personally don't agree with people saying that this game is bad. The graphics could be better but they are okay and even if they really were as horrible as some people think, the gameplay is the most important thing, isn't it? Otherwise you wouldn't look at an adventure game review on an old games website but at a 3D action game review instead. And the gameplay is, in this case, awesome.
In my opinion it is as funny as the first two Simon the Sorcerer games and it's much funnier than Simon the Sorcerer 4 (I haven't played Simon the Sorcerer 5 yet). You'll find a lot of parallels to the two older Simon games. For people who liked the RPG playing guys in Simon the Sorcerer two and one (I loved that part in game 2), Simon the Sorcerer 3D has that too for example.
The only really bad thing I can see about the game is this one minigame where you have to catch fairies. You have to catch a bunch of them and that wouldn't be a problem but the thing is, they only pop up every now and then. Sometimes you have to wait for half an hour until you see one. This is really, really boring. There are cheat tools to get around this though.
