This is my favorite game in the series. Its VERY random and funny. It's great to have a hero who is a jerk.
This is a perfect example of how you don't need good graphics to have a fantastic game. That being said, they pushed the 3D a lil early for its time
Pros:
The 3rd dimension provides a larger world to explore and you can manoeuvre Simon around more easily when you get used to the controls. The game is as entertaining and funny as the previous instalments.
Cons:
The changing camera angles are annoying at times - such as the one where you're looking down at Simon's head, though stylistically it looks good.
Movement in some parts of the game is frustratingly 'jerky' at times when you need to act quickly because you're completing a puzzle against a time limit.
This game has some bugs that need fixing - such as Simon occasionally getting stuck in places like opening and closing doorways if you don't move out of the way fast enough, and sometimes there’s no getting out of it without a game reload.
I had some game crashes, which may have had something to do with the performance of my PC. Save your position often if losing it would mean having to go through a lot of steps again - just in case.
There are title cards in between some scenes that last a few seconds as the next one is loading which slows the game down somewhat.
Overall I really enjoyed playing it and to be fair it's very reasonably priced here so I would recommend it.
I'm aware of a German made 4th instalment but I'm not keen on Simon suddenly being American for some bizarre reason. Try using hint books unless you have unlimited time and patience to work it all out for yourself, which unfortunately I don't. Happy gaming!
The good is that it partly keeps in line with the same style of humour as the two first games, the bad is that the switch to 3D was diabolical in every other aspect. Bottom line is, if you put your mind to it you can enjoy the game, but you have to forgive a lot of unnecessary frustrations, bugs, inconsistencies, glitches and nonsensical controls.
The worst part of this game is navigation, the controls and how these are used in the game. When they switched to 3D they made the decision to attempt to use this new "perspective" in their puzzles, using depth as part of the puzzles. The puzzles often feel unnecessary; navigate a maze, follow a trail, crawl into holes - puzzles that wouldn't even be puzzles if you had better controls. Random bugs and glitches also makes puzzles unnecessarily difficult to finish.
And that is where this game falls so badly compared to its predecessors. So many of the puzzles are challenging just because of the controls the game has. So many puzzles are not clever, don't require much logic or thinking at all, and are based almost entirely on using poor controls to execute seemingly simple tasks. While you have a handful of decent "classic" puzzles scattered around, it would be so much more enjoyable in 2D and without the pointless "3D puzzles". It is painful to play this game while being awfully aware that if it was in 2D you would have a much better time, and a much better game.
Yet this is still a Simon game. Simon is still an arrogant and insensetive jerk, Sordid still does things unnecessarily complicated, and Calypso is as unhelpful as ever. I found Simon considerably less witty in this version, but that might just be me. That part - given you can get past the truly horrendous game-mechanics - is still enjoyable. It's just not a very good "game".

I'm also fairly certain the very last puzzle, which is kinda clever, could be a bit difficult to solve on certain modern laptops?

Simon 3D is difficult to judge. Cranking up your modern graphics card's settings will definitely help (though I had some z-fighting with buildings constantly). After getting around a bit/getting used to and stopping being overwhelmed by the huge game environment it gets easier und you will find some ingenious and witty stuff in there. Simon's puberal attitude will sometimes get on your nerves.
There is also one or the other puzzle and minigame that is unfair/hard; yet I just finished the game with with two or three hints. Save often, EXE crashed one time or the other on me. This is a long game if you take it seriously. If your clueless take a break and continue the next or the other day with a fresh mind. Often things will come to you and don't hesitate trying to combine things even if Simon says otherwise ;-)
And yes, the main reason why I'm writing this: The game IS completable despite another posting. Scroll down, hard to say anything without spoiling everything. If you've played the first two parts you'll probably want to play it anyway despite some shortcomings. I wanted to know what became of Simon and how that affects the sequels before me. If you havent' played 1 and 2 rather don't touch this.
Well I could only imagine one showstopper regarding the completion: If you had no optical drive at all ... but if you have, it doesn't matter WHAT you eject! I have two drives, Win10 Creators, i7 and GTX 1070 - pretty modern, just finished successfully. But as always with hardware/software combinations your mileage may vary.
