I'd love to try this game, I spent 2 hours yesterday trying to get this game to run smoothly.
I have an old graphics card (GTX 970) but still it should run the game fine, I get fps drops from 460 to 20, the game stutters so badly :(
Maybe in the future there will be a performance patch that will make this playable or I'll get a NASA computer to run this game.
Music is too loud, tutorial is mission is trash (who has you play as a level 31 pre-made character for a tutorial?), default keybinds didn't have numbers 1-8 for my skills, even though the skills are labelled 1-8, pathfinding is trash. I'd click somewhere I'd like to move to, and the character would 180 going the opposite direction to go around a river to get to the spot I clicked, even though there was nothing visible in my way. Combat is trash, half the time I don't hit the enemy but they always hit me, there are endless mobs the moment you leave the village. I get that this game is old, but my point in writing this review is: SKIP THIS, there are much better older games out there if you want something in this genre.
2006 or so was a bit of a weird time for games. Game writing hadn't truly come into its own yet. Not too many professional writers were lining up to pen video game stories, and even then, it would be years before writers truly codified the skills & style needed specifically for video games. Even today, a lot of professional writers have trouble transitioning to writing for games, when they decide to enter the industry.
I say this primarily because, well, the story is bad. The writing is garbage. There aren't characters so much as props, and instead of a narrative you're presented with a series of tropes haphazardly strung together. It's a good plot/premise, though.
Mechanically speaking, the game is buggy and unpolished. Graphical bugs, pathfinding issues, input bugs, quest bugs... You're going to encounter A LOT OF BUGS. But! The game is very much playable and... Kind of enjoyable, actually?
Graphically, the game is a knockout. It's an early attempt at cellshading that works incredibly well. There's a lot of great looking assets here, from environments to mobs. The weapons are a bit hockey (glowy WoW-esque weapons), the armors are pretty cool, the character customization is a bit light but still distinct (with some interesting species choices to choose from).
Combat... Feels off. Like they were trying to be both Neverwinter Nights and Diablo at the same time, but failing to nail down what made either of those successful. The result is a sort of dumbed down version of KOTOR. It's fairly easy to exploit, too. One gripe is your companions do love to die, which necessitates putting points in Resurrect (and INT, enough to actually have the power to revive them) or fast traveling back to a city. You can't really do anything else to bring them back to life.
Anyways, I'm having fun with this game. It's a shame the dev shutdown, because this would be a fun IP to revive. It's neither Diablo nor Arcanum, but it's worth playing if you like cRPGs and aRPGs.
I've played this game for 44 minutes and in that time I've encountered at least a dozen bugs, ranging from minor annoyances like NPCs walking into walls and furniture to major issues like player characters getting stuck on nothing during battle.
Me and my buddy tried to play the campaign mode together, but we always started in different cities, and every time the second player logged in, the first players character became uncontrollable, rendering this game mode completely unplayable.
The sound design and music are less than mediocre,
in terms of visuals the game is somehow worse than Neverwinter Nights, which came out 5 years earlier,
hitboxes are messed up, sometimes you click on an enemy and start attacking another one, and sometimes you can't move past enemies, because if you click next to them you will attack them all the same,
all in all, the game is barely playable single player, and practically unplayable in multiplayer.
I would not recommend this to anyone who doesn't have a big nostalgia boner for it already.
