The good old days
I bought a physical copy of "The Room" back when it came out. For the most part it plays like a good Japanese horror movie converted into a computer game with all the twisted aspects of this genre and some superb storytelling to match. "The room" pretty much says it all: Our protagonist moves into room 302, only to find the door locked and him unable to leave. The only way to escape seems to be through a strange hole in the bathroom, allowing him to enter a grotesque mirror dimension of his reality, where he hopes to find another exit into the real world - if there is any. Over time, the lines between both dimensions blur and bend, threatening to swallow the protagonist whole. The passages in your room are played in first person. The room also serves as a hub between the episodes and changes to reflect your progress. As soon as you start another episode by entering the other side, the game switches to third person. Here you fight twisted monsters with a variety of weapons, explore horrifying scenes and solve puzzles. Controls are far from perfect, with the camera angle frequently not showing you what you need to see. I found myself fighting with that camera and the controls more than with the monsters and puzzles during some parts, which can get a bit frustrating. The graphic style is dark, at times monochromatic, reflecting decay as the general theme of the game. The art for large stretches resembles the look and feel of classic Japanese horror movies in a good way. Obviously the graphics have aged though--still the storytelling more than makes up for that. The game takes about 4-8 hours to complete. Ergo: If you are a fan of intense, well told horror in general and Japanese horror in particular. If you are willing to accept a few short comings in regards to controls and don't necessarily care for high-res graphics, "The Room" has your horror fix. Recommended!

Hoping Konami gets the message
I still have my original PS2 copy of this game, plus a working PS2 that's connected to my TV, so even without this new version, I can play SH4 any time I want. Furthermore, I own a Mac, not a PC. I bought this new port anyway. For now, I'll probably just install it on my Win10 work laptop. On the other hand, this might be the game that finally convinces me to set up a gaming PC, even though I've been avoiding that for years. That's how much I love SH4: Even though it's my least favorite of the first four Silent Hill titles, that's kind of like saying it's the worst slice of the best pizza I've ever eaten in my life. It's still freaking amazing. As much as I'm looking forward to playing this game again, what I'm really hoping for is that Konami sees such an avalanche of sales here that they realize that they're throwing away money by keeping this series dormant. I'm not optimistic, given their history over the past several years, but I can still dream, right?
