You play Sanjuro Makabe, a Mobile Combat Armor (MCA) pilot and Commander in the UCA Security Force. The UCA was originally formed by three dominant megacorporations (Andra Biomechanics, Armacham Technology Corporation, and Shogo Industries). Originally intended as a joint venture that would ensure the continued profitability of the three organizations that founded it, the UCA is now independent, and the dominant military power in existence.
Your mission is to locate and assassinate a rebel leader known only as Gabriel. All of the action takes place either on the planet Cronus or on the spaceship Leviathan. The Leviathan is the flagship of the UCA and is commanded by Admiral Akkaraju. Cronus is the only known source of the biologically active material known as Kato, an incredibly powerful energy source essential to the process by which interstellar travel is possible.
Your deadly enemy is The Fallen, a fanatical terrorist group lead by the mysterious Gabriel, threatens the balance of power on Cronus, and ultimately, control of Kato. You will fight them on your feet or from within one of the different types of Mobile Combat Armor, a giant mech which can run, duck, strafe, swim or transform into an ultrafast hovertank.
You will know the true power of giant robots!
Anime-influenced graphics and gameplay design
Fight on foot or pilot a giant mech in both open and urban environments
An interesting storyline with two possible endings
Any chances for native Linux version? I remember playing this on Linux in mid-2000s... Will buy when you release native Linux binaries (not wine-powered, mind you).
IMPORTANT: If you are going to play this game, it's important that you DO NOT USE THE ADVANCED OPTIONS IN THE GAME START UP, IT WILL MESS UP YOUR COMPUTER. I tried playing Shogo with all the advanced options on, and it almost fucked up my dad's computer, he had to revert back to a recovery system so that his computer could run properly. I repeat, DO NOT USE THE ADVANCED OPTIONS IF YOU VALUE YOUR COMPUTER AND WANT IT TO RUN PROPERLY, OR IF YOU WANT TO LOG IN PROPERLY.
Other than that, the game is pretty fun, though the in-game music would not play for me, leaving me in complete silence throughout the game, and thus I couldn't really enjoy the game that much (this is when I unkowingly started tampering with the Advanced options, WHICH I DIDN'T KNOW THAT IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO COMPLETELY FUCK UP YOUR COMPUTER SYSTEMS), if you want to play the game, go right ahead, just be sure that you DON'T TAMPER WITH THE GAME'S ADVANCED OPTIONS.
P.S. it's because of this that I'm no longer buying games from GOG until they put out warnings about games that could damage the hardware on the computer so that something like this does not happen ever again.
I love classic games, since I grew up with them. Shogo was one of the title I missed, never got the chance to play it. Monolith was one of my favorite developer back then, specially with the Blood franchise.
Now it's on GOG, at last I can get my hands on it. With high hopes and expectation, the game just feel too old, specially within the mechanics. Please do take a note I'm fine with the graphics, because I still play older games like Quake and Doom to this second.
Comparing this game to Quake isn't fair isn't it? Well, funny enough that I enjoyed Blood II more than this game. Same developer, almost same time of release date, based on GOG's specification. Blood II got less than average review, while this game was praised from every direction possible.
There're way older, but much better games released the same year as this game, naming Turok and Chasm the Rift. And who doesn't know about Half Life?
The idea of a Mecha-Anime themed FPS sounds rather good, but all in all, the result of Shogo is rather poor.
Small levels (Some are 1 or 2 rooms large) make it popcorn sized enough to tolerate, such that you can finish the game off in a couple of hours. Uninteresting characters, bad dialogue and plot come next. I just can't care enough to be interested in anything.
The 'human' mode missions have a great difficulty spike compared to really *really* easy mecha combat. quick-save/load will be used extensively.
The promise and concept are all there, but sadly Shogo just falls flat and there is not really anything positive to say about it.
