Description
You play Sanjuro Makabe, a Mobile Combat Armor (MCA) pilot and Commander in the UCA Security Force. The UCA was originally formed by three dominant megacorporations (Andra Biomechanics, Armacham Technology Corporation, and Shogo Industries). Originally intended as a joint venture that would ensure the continued profitability of the three organizations that founded it, the UCA is now independent, and the dominant military power in existence.

Your mission is to locate and assassinate a rebel leader known only as Gabriel. All of the action takes place either on the planet Cronus or on the spaceship Leviathan. The Leviathan is the flagship of the UCA and is commanded by Admiral Akkaraju. Cronus is the only known source of the biologically active material known as Kato, an incredibly powerful energy source essential to the process by which interstellar travel is possible.

Your deadly enemy is The Fallen, a fanatical terrorist group lead by the mysterious Gabriel, threatens the balance of power on Cronus, and ultimately, control of Kato. You will fight them on your feet or from within one of the different types of Mobile Combat Armor, a giant mech which can run, duck, strafe, swim or transform into an ultrafast hovertank.

You will know the true power of giant robots!
  • Anime-influenced graphics and gameplay design
  • Fight on foot or pilot a giant mech in both open and urban environments
  • An interesting storyline with two possible endings

So glitchy as not to be worth it

I would really love to give it more than 2 stars - the story is interesting, the voice acting compelling, the looks of the enemies - varied. However the controls are clunky, the rendering is always laggy and buggy - I have a PC which, is what ?, at the very least 32 times more powerful than the minimal requirements and it still barely runs about 12 frames per second - on every graphics mode, and the friendly AI is just stupid - gets stuck in walls, elevators, gets "killed" or accidentally rocketjumped off the map. The enemy AI is just not much better - either bumrushing you all at once, or ignoring you completely, allowing basically to kill off every "sniper" with a barely plinker, sporting barely a scratch. Oh, and the main character has no "at ease" animation, so in every cutscene and interaction on the friendly base levels, he looks like a raving maniac ready to stab everything and everyone. The weapons - there is barely any difference between any type of projectile weapon, except rockets, so I don't even see why the creators insisted on having more than 2 types - melee and ranged. Sure - they look different and nice, but the function is almost identical. Hell, Terminal Velocity, which came out about the same time as Shogo, managed to make a look and feel of 4 types of lasers be different and get used for different purposes. It is just very bad and detracts from the story which otherwise would have been interesting. Someone needs to take the story and the voice acting and put it onto a graphics engine worthy of the name.

Fantastic title that no longer runs

I've played through Shogo many times way back. I was happy to find it again on GOG and used whatever tricks I could find to get it working. Unfortunately, those tricks don't appear to work any longer. Both Shogo and Blood II crash immediately on start no matter what solution I try.

Not all games age gracefully

Shogo is one of those games that time has not been particularly kind to. The graphics are pretty lacklustre (actually that might be too kind - they are terrible), and don't even have the luxury of having good art or interesting level design to save face. The levels are very linear and at times it feels like the level designers only had a series of different textured boxes to build the levels out of. The AI of the ingame enemies can be a bit suspect, they tend to stand still until you edge into view and then have pixel perfect aim, which for higher difficulty settings can be extremely frustrating to round a corner only to be shot dead instantly before you have time to even see an enemy. Quickload will soon become your friend. The story starts out as fairly silly and gets to the point where it gets downright ridiculous. (oops I missed the train, now I need to find a cat in order to get a lady to disable her electric fence !?!) On the whole, it does have its moments but there are much better games to purchase on GOG.

OK but not great

So I just finished Shogo. When I got to the end and realized it was the end I thought "that's it?". Not much of a last battle. The game itself was playable and OK enough to get through. The graphics were poor and a bit dark in places. It was often difficult to figure out where the enemy fire was coming from. And it was sometimes difficult to figure out where you were supposed to go. I got the game when it was on sale. I definitely don't recommend it for the normal price. And I can't really recommend it for the sale price. But, if you should happen to buy it on sale, it is probably worth the 3 bucks. But you won't miss out if you never play this.
