Description
You play Sanjuro Makabe, a Mobile Combat Armor (MCA) pilot and Commander in the UCA Security Force. The UCA was originally formed by three dominant megacorporations (Andra Biomechanics, Armacham Technology Corporation, and Shogo Industries). Originally intended as a joint venture that would ensure the continued profitability of the three organizations that founded it, the UCA is now independent, and the dominant military power in existence.

Your mission is to locate and assassinate a rebel leader known only as Gabriel. All of the action takes place either on the planet Cronus or on the spaceship Leviathan. The Leviathan is the flagship of the UCA and is commanded by Admiral Akkaraju. Cronus is the only known source of the biologically active material known as Kato, an incredibly powerful energy source essential to the process by which interstellar travel is possible.

Your deadly enemy is The Fallen, a fanatical terrorist group lead by the mysterious Gabriel, threatens the balance of power on Cronus, and ultimately, control of Kato. You will fight them on your feet or from within one of the different types of Mobile Combat Armor, a giant mech which can run, duck, strafe, swim or transform into an ultrafast hovertank.

You will know the true power of giant robots!
  • Anime-influenced graphics and gameplay design
  • Fight on foot or pilot a giant mech in both open and urban environments
  • An interesting storyline with two possible endings

Anime + Video Games = OK

Shogo: Mobile Armour Division is arguably an anime made into a video game (or perhaps vice versa) and it's fairly obvious from the very beginning. Protagonist Sanjuro Makabe is much like many anime or even non-anime pilots: a wise-cracking ace who tends to obey the rules so long as they don't get in the way of his good intentions. The characterizations are very plain and the writing is average at best but it holds the game together well enough that you feel as though you are progressing for a reason and it's fully voice acted though that may or may not be a huge selling point. From time to time people and events which seem to have no prior connection to the story appear and are expected to be taken at face value in true anime form like a gruff, red-bearded man who's introduced as "a friend of Jack's" and without explaining Jack's relevance or this man's (unfortunately I've forgotten the name) credentials he proceeds to handle your mission command for several missions then on despite being non-military personnel. Gameplay however is much more solid, using essentially every other shooter as a guideline for the encounters, enemy behaviour and weapon and armour acquisition. Additionally the game has two modes: one in your MCA and the other on foot. Where the former is more like most games of its time where simply charging in, guns blazing, is often as safe a choice as any the latter is mildly more nuanced and requires a bit more tactical thinking without a disparate change in pace or feeling like you've entered an extraneous stealth game like the switch from Vincent to Cait Sith in SquareEnix's Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus (Forgive my fanboyism just the most egregious offender I could think of). Level design is nice compared to even some modern games but the weapon choice is unimaginative and somewhat broken. Seven out of 10 weapons are available by the 3rd mission, including a sniper rifle that kills instantly when used while zoomed and the ballistic version of a rocket launcher which kills nearly anything in a single round and anything around it including "mini-bosses", and there is never a lack of stock for any of the ammo types. On top of the lack-luster AI, Shogo's weapons limit the challenge it would otherwise present. The foot soldier mode is significantly better in that regard though. The weapons are a bit too powerful but you are also considerably easier to kill and a little less capable of dodging and the nicer the weapon you're using the less ammo you run across. Graphically it's unremarkable; similar to an early N64 title but the blood effects are amusing for a short while and are definitely in line with the anime style of the game. The explosions are good considering and ultimately its better than you might expect when you look at the copyright date but not by much In the end, for six dollars, its a good way to spend a few hours and a fun catharsis if you like giant fighting robots but don't expect to ask why you never saw this game before

Everything i wanted those days

This game is awesome. There was nothing else like that, when this game was released. It had a story, you could pilot a Mech it had ridiculous weapons and a fair challenge in one package. Though it has dated graphics its still fun.

Best. Game. Ever!

This was the most ridiculous fun I ever had in a computer game. Story was crazy, blowing up everything in a Mech was insane and everything about it was great! So glad I've got this again as my original version wouldn't work on my new laptop!

Great game for the time

When this came out, I had received it with either my Voodoo3 2000 or GeForce 2 GTS video card. I figured it, much like most bundled games, was a substandard, barely playable game. In actuality, I found that the game itself was pretty decent and memorable. The game engine was very smooth and the graphics were quite polished for that time. The game story and execution of it was pretty nice. I liked how you went from pilot to the mech throughout the game. This isn't a Final Fantasy-level of story but enjoyable enough to keep you paying attention to the game. Also, when you start the game, try to knife your boss. They planned for quite a bit.

Framerate chaos

The audio and all is tied to the framerate, the game does not offer a framerate limiter, so expect character cutting each other's dialogues, crazy fast enemies and all around chaos, is technically playable, but is horrendous, no fullscreen either so get comfortable with the shogo title bar. I tried the AMD software to limit my FPS to not avail. Sure, I could go out of my way to try and solve this with some third party software or something, but is not worth it.
