Shivers

Shivers was one of the first PC games I got back in the 90s, and I loved it.. While it was never a scary game, the title suited it well....because it gave you a serious case of the willies. The abandoned museum in which we are trapped overnight is such a joy to explore, because it's not stuffy art or dulled down history. It's "Professor Windlenot's Museum of the Strange and Unusual" . Exploring the dozens of cavernous rooms brimming with bizarre yet wonderful exhibits is a ghoulish sweet treat for the puzzle loving mind. I also loved the lush score for the game. Every room in the ,museum had its own unique theme that played while you're inside them. Every one of those loops of music managed to transport you ,not just into another room, but to an entirely world with an entirely different set of puzzles and pitfalls . And yet as evocative as each song was, the underlying feeling you got while listening to them was distinctly melancholy, which in turn adds to the profound sense of loneliness and loss that follows you throughout this most bizarre night. Oh, did I forget to mention that you're not alone in there? Ok, see, while the museum has been closed for years, it was never unoccupied. Because it's now filled with demons. And if you can't exorcise every single nasty creep out of the place by dawn, you're never going home. Ever.

This is the pinnacle of what an adventure game should be. It's atmospheric, full of great puzzles, has an unfolding story, immersive, an excellent location to explore and most important, it's fun! Most of my searches for new adventure games begin with a Google of "games like Shivers". Most don't come close. There's just something about it that allows it to overcome all it's shortcomings and shine. It's a bit dated in some areas but I'm currently playing it with my 9 year old son and it still plays incredibly well. He and i are really into it and it's scary enough he refuses to enter certain rooms inside the museum. The demons are rendered as bad as I remembered them (think cartoons) which was the only major shortcoming of the game. If they had nailed the animations this would by far be the best game I have ever played. The fact they could miss on such an important aspect of the game and it still be a resounding win says it all.

I love Shivers and it is my favorite game from my childhood. Replaying it in 2020 was such a treat and it brought back a flood of happy memories of playing this game with my older sister. I love the variety of puzzles and the backstory. The only criticisms I have are the graphics and the health meter. As for the graphics, the video clips and images are a bit grainy on modern computers; it would be nice to have a remastered version like Real Myst. As for the health meter, it isn't needed. Once you know that Ixupis are noisy, it's easy to avoid bumping into them. If you decide to play this game, keep in mind that it's over twenty-five years old. Also, if you like The 7th Guest, give this a try.
