Not playable by modern standards

It's been a long time, but I recall playing this as a kid, so I gave it a shot. There are a lot of problems with the GOG version with the game alternating between running way too fast, and very slow. The default keybindings highlight a bug where using the keyboard to move the head moves it much too quickly. Mouse aiming is also very imprecise, but at least playable. The FMVs are also offset into the bottom right-hand side of the screen, which is also weird. There are also major problems with hit detection, which may or may not have been in the original, but given that I can't go back 20 years, I can't say. Regardless, expect to see missiles and lasers clip right through enemies, and to deplete your entire laser reserves, because shots that visibly should have hit do not register. Thankfully, the game does provide some visual feedback when hits register. I stopped after about 4 missions. There isn't much reason to continue. This game should be relegated to only a historical footnote.

Unplayable

Thank you, GOG, for putting "powered by Dosbox" on the store page for this game. I tried the game, tried tweaking the settings both in-game and the Dosbox settings, but it just doesn't work. You can drive a giant machine around and shoot at stuff, but actually hitting things is another matter. Accomplishing mission objectives is practically impossible. If it ran better it would probably be a decent game, but it's hard to tell. Bottom line: this is not fun.

Old but still ok

Shattered steel is a good game but it is old and diffidently showing it. Despite this it has decent gameplay, though the hit detection could be better. The mission briefing is similar to the one in Evolva though it doesn't really tell you what your exactly supposed to do though you generally get the out line (i.e. kill the red things/ the things shooting at you). One mission gets you defending an area larger then your radar can see while it gets attacked from all directions by a multitude of enemies, kind of hard since 2/3rds of the enemies aren’t in viewing distance and there is probably another fifth not seeable by your radar. Apart from that many of the missions are fairly easy.

Hasn't held up, but not bad.

This game features great customization and combat, but is hampered by its hit detection. If it had better hit detection it would still be a solid game. However it's features at the time, such as destroyable terrain, were very impressive.

Well, at least it plays!

I will save you, and myself, a lot of rehashing. Read the review written by GSilver. He/She pretty much covers the whole experience in a nutshell. Save your money on this one!
