Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse succeeds by building a funny, gorgeous world around its tried and true Metroidvania gameplay. In the brief moments when the combat becomes exhausting, it’s the writing, in all its self-referential and juvenile glory, and its visual splendor that keep the pace going. Though it’s an unmistakable tribute to Metroid and Castlevania, infusing a sharp wit and bold style helps Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse stand above its retro-inspired contemporaries.

With this game, a cult favorite comes into its own. Shantae has always been a passion project for WayForward, but this is the first time the series feels like it properly realizes the developer's ambition for it. A fun, funny, and pleasant substantial Metroid-alike boasting phenomenal old-school visuals and a refreshing sense of optimism, it's both an eShop standout and a great (though by no means final) conclusion to a slow-burning trilogy of games.

Fun , Happy Metroidvania

It's a metroidvania with a pun filled, sligtly risqué, completely bonkers story that still traps you in. Full of references and some well thought out callbacks to the genre, previous games (which I haven't played), adult themes and a lot of games. One of the weapons is literally a callback to a famous hard metroidvania game. Wife and I have been loving it!

It's a nice game, but

Too bad developers hated save game spots. Some seem very distant of the last one you found. If you don't know the map you can pass a lot of time unable to save. And that last level, holy sh... Some people call it a metroidvania (although it's not). If it is, the "vania" part must be because of your smaller hit box while enemy's is bigger, just like old Castlevania games . Note: upgrades are almost useless, go for the increased attack speed first, them pistol damage. That said, I still enjoyed the game a lot.

Get it for free - worht it

Good: - lovable. silly characters - music - some mini stories - some platforming - some bosses have interesting fights (not VERY hard) Bad: - keys... tons of keys, sometimes I misclick it - no saves on demand (especially last part) - some bosses are just bullet sponges (get few upgrades and you kill them easily) - teleporting only to ship (where you go to each island) is not very helpful - maps are horrible - no way to "mark" stuffs (I didn't remember 1 stuff to backtrack) - random hidden rooms (some have important items) - stop to attack I have some fun with it but I wouldn't pay 70pln (~15 euro) for that.

As long as your OS is not in english you cant play the game in english. Well on the Steam version you could...
