Reimagining Done Right
There are only a couple of things that I want an old school FPS to do: have many guns (that feel like BLAST to use), fast gameplay, level design that encourages exploration, variety of levels, and a humorous tone. What I don't want to have is boring, washed-out colours, a two-weapon system, regenerating health, tunnel-like level design and a story taking itself way too seriously. I am happy, really happy to report that Shadow Warrior is a fantastic example of the former. It does everything right what an old shooter fan wants from it. The guns are varied and each of them has its own, unique punch. The levels (though a bit more linear than the classic, Build-egine ones) encourage exploration for the secrets. The gunplay is very satisfying with many „oh sh*t, that was awesome” moments. And everything is here that is needed in a proper Wang game: bunnies, pixellated anime babes, over-the-top gore, and funny one-liners. I cannot recommend this game highly enough. If you’re a bit like me, and you’re tired of the same old „shooting gallery – cutscene – shooting gallery – rinse – repeat” mechanic, and you want an awesome shooting experience, then you have to buy Shadow Warrior. Period.
