i LOVE this game, i have been playing it since 2008 when it was on disk, it is a true pirate RPG, its fun, simple, and has LOTS of content. although it may have a few bugs it is definantly my favorite game of all time
It's really the best one. There are a lot of things and mechanics in the game. Something like Elite in pirate setting. Even in nowadays graphics looks good enough. But some problems can be met, because of specific Storm engine, which was used for this game. Sadly, but it doesn't work under wine on Linux.
But ones again, you can find nothing better than this game about pirates.
Maybe some days we will see remake... I hope.
I was hyped by the other reviews. The game does seem ambititious. I've put 2.5 hours into it and it just hasn't been fun. The controls and camera are atrocious. The dialogue and narrative are entertaining, but the quests themselves seem mechanically tedious. I don't see how you can reliably play this without save-scumming every battle. For some reason the manual is missing on the GOG release, but you can Google it.
Another post below mentions downloading the Combined Mod 3.2.0 to fix some bugs.
I discovered that Mod is no longer supported in favor of a new Mod Pack - Gentlemen of Fortune! 2.0.
Just a heads up.

Owned it before, and now I'm glad, that GOG makes it available worldwide. To my opinion, it's the best way to mix in one game the personal adventure of the characters, sea battles, abordage and a litttle bit of managing your ship, crew & cargo. Not too much management to become bored, just to feel connection with it.
Lots of freedom. Really, why anyone needs a pirates game, if not for freedom of the open sea? You really choose yourself, what to do: trade, fight or look for adventure. But if you want a storyline, a long complicated quest - you can find enough/
Sword fighting is good. Easy to learn, hard to master. You make your way as a sword master or use just simple basics: anyway you have fun.
Ships really differ. Big or fast, large room for cargo or for crew, and other ways to decide, what is best for you. Everything has its pros&contras.
The only thing to be aware of: if you start the game, it takes a lot of time ;)
