Clunky Open World Goodness

Seriously, the player interface is clunky and not intuitive. Very frustrating until you memorize where things are. But if you stick with it, it becomes a fantastic open world sailing/trading/fighting/pirating/adventure. F2 key is your friend to finding most important stuff about your character, ships, crew, etc. As mentioned below, Piratesahoy.net hosts some must-have mods that both fix and add to the stock game. Also note that you don't HAVE to play as a pirate in this game. It's totally free choice on a grand scale. Giving it only 4 stars because of the gawd awful stock interface and lack of a proper tutorial. Sail on.

The DEFINITIVE Pirate RPG Game

Very old Akella "Sea Dog" since 2000. I was part of the team that ported corrections of this game to English based on errors on the dialogue coding and engine. If you want a pirate game that has interesting quests (some of which are keyboard breaking hard), but rewarding, this is your game. There is no other game that can match the overall atmosphere of this title, even after over a decade. This includes its sequel, "Sea Dogs: To Each His Own". The graphics and engine are dated today, and the control scheme archaic but this is easy to overcome. The few aspects that most modern gamers have problems are the rogue style gameplay (saving is critical), lack of clear directions (no big pointy arrows), and the need to take actual notes on paper (oh, the humanity!). "Do you have the courage and fortitude to follow orders and stay true in the face of danger and almost certain death?"

Best of the series, especially with mods

The vanilla game is ok, if a little buggy. But this game really shines if you add the Gentlemen of Fortune 2.0 mod. This mod will add many more starting characters, options, ships, quests, expanded trading options etc etc. It's a great Pirate RPG, that includes character progression and a vast array of vessels to use. Still looks pretty nice at 1080p.

It's tough but rewarding

This is really an excellent development on Sid Meier's Pirates! formula and I've spent hundreds of hours playing it. It now has skills, companions, randomized missions and several proper questlines; also you're no longer just a ship and can roam around in human form. Though thankfully the dance minigame didn't make it here. Be warned however, it is not newbie friendly in the slightest: interface is somewhat odd, you really should check the manual to get how some things work; any first time player can forget about setting difficulty above easiest because even "normal" is quite brutal; and campaign start as Peter Blood is not a tutorial you'd probably expect, but a fairly tough advanced start scenario.

One of the best sailing/pirate game

If you love sailing, naval combat and being a pirate captain, then this game is really good. Playing this game is like having a romantic relationship with your ship. The ship itself is so beautifully modeled, the sea is so alive. When you are standing on your ship at sea, you see the entire ship is in motion with the waves, you hear squeaking of the ship, the sea water brushing against the hull, the wind blowing on the sail, and beautiful music playing in the background, right there and then you know this game is worth the money. I would be happy just to experience the feeling of sailing the ocean. This game's engine is really old and have not been developed a lot over the years, so its game mechanics is relatively primitive, but for so little money you are getting a lot of game here.
