Scorn is an atmospheric first-person horror adventure game set in a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry.
It is designed around the idea of "being thrown into the world". Isolated and lost inside this dream-like world, you will explore different interconnected regions in a non-linear fashion. The unsettling environment is a character itself.
Every location contains its own theme (story), puzzles and characters that are integral in creating a cohesive world. Throughout the game you will open up new areas, acquire different skill sets, weapons, various items and try to comprehend the sights presented to you.
GAMEPLAY FEATURES
COHESIVE "LIVED-IN" WORLD Scorn takes place in an open-ended world with different interconnected regions. Each region is a maze-like structure with various rooms and paths to discover. All the storytelling happens in-game, with no cut-scenes to distract you from the grisly reality of the living, breathing world you’re in. But keep your eyes open - the game won’t show you any sympathy if you miss something important on your uneasy travels.
FULL BODY AWARENESS
Players will experience better immersion being aware of the character’s body and movement. Interaction with the world is realistic - objects are picked up with your hands (instead of just floating in midair), machines and instruments are operated by grabbing the controls, etc.
INVENTORY AND AMMO MANAGEMENT
Your loadout is defined and limited. This plays a big role in keeping the player in an even greater state of awareness throughout the whole game. Players will have to think about when to fight and when to take cover and how their actions affect the world around them. Different play styles will be needed to advance.

The artwork really does the majority of the work with this title, but the soundscape backs it up well. There is little discernible story to speak of and the combat feels ... weak. I understand that this isn't a Doom style FPS with really tactile shooting mechanics, but I'd like a little more feedback from the weapons as I'm using them.
Pros:
- Incredible art style heavily influenced by HR Giger
- Evocative sound design that draws you into the environment
- Puzzles that require use of the space
Cons:
- Poor shooting mechanics
- Weak story
- Very short
You may be wondering, why 3/5 with so many core issues? I think it's a combination of the excellent world design and the fact that finishing the game left me feeling very unsettled, which is not something I'd normally say for a videogame.
Scorn isn’t a game you play because someone recommended it...you play it because you’re drawn to this kind of thing. It’s dark, creepy, disgusting, and unapologetically so. Even as a fan of eerie alien worlds, I found it morbid at times.
There’s no hand-holding here. The game gives you no guidance, no explanations...just an oppressive, surreal biomechanical nightmare for you to interpret (or not). It’s more art than game, like stepping into a living, breathing painting by H.R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński. If that sounds like your thing, Scorn absolutely delivers.
Playing this game after reading so much about H.R. GIGER's art is a dream come true. This game is an atmospheric BLAST of a time - graphically and sound design wise.
The gameplay fits perfectly. And I also admire the bold decision to justify "bad" combat for the sake of disgusting gameplay.
I wanted immersion, exploration and great biomechanical design.
I got it. 5/5 because it offered what I got it for.
It also has some fun gameplay and challenging combat.
Puzzles sometimes give you options. First big puzzle can give you a companion.
I recommend if you like this style. It did give me Starcraft 1 zerg vibes at times.
10/10 design.
I'm not going to finish the game. The controls and movement are sloppy. The "combat" element is very poorly implemented. I had an enemy magically clip in behind me in an empty room, and then a few minutes later an enemy charged through a solid obstacle and killed me. No thanks.
