Sam is a six-foot canine detective with a love of justice. Max is a hyperkinetic rabbity-thing with a taste for mayhem. Together, they're the Freelance Police. And they're about to save the world.

Good to have you back, little buddy!
In 2006, the comic book crime-fighting duo Sam & Max starred in the first full-fledged episodic game from Telltale, the studio that went on to make The Walking Dead and Batman: The Enemy Within .

Now everyone's favorite dog and rabbity-thing are back in Sam & Max Save the World Remastered, a new version of their first season of episodic games that has been lovingly updated by a small group of the original developers with the blessing of Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell.

Return to the adventure game that was once called "gaming's first sitcom" and is today known as "the remaster you didn't know you were waiting for." With enhanced graphics, new widescreen and gamepad support, five new musical tracks, and the same brain-tickling puzzles and offbeat humor that won it IGN's Best Adventure GOTY award back in the day, Sam & Max Save the World Remastered is a modern classic that you'll love to play—or play again.

Now, let's go save the world...
It's just another day at the office for the self-proclaimed Freelance Police when the Commissioner calls in with a disturbing report: former child stars are running amok in the street! What starts as an open-and-shut case of idiotic vandalism balloons into an all-out conspiracy as Sam and Max encounter one miscreant after another who have been mysteriously hypnotized. (You can tell from the "spinny thing" they do with their eyes.)

Who's the source of this malfeasance, and what is their dastardly plan? Cracking this case will require Sam's nose for detective work, Max's lack of conscience, an assortment of inventory items, and a little help from neighbors Sybil Pandemik, Bosco, and Jimmy Two-Teeth. From Sam & Max's street to the White House lawn, inside the internet, and all the way to the moon, this baffling mystery gets weirder and funnier as it unfolds.

Great remaster,controversial change

Sam and Max is one of my favorite adventure game series and I was very pleased with this remaster. First they've updated visuals. The new lighting, models, and camera effects all look great and fit super well. Secondly they changed a bunch of the audio. All the dialogue and music has been re-encoded so it sounds much higher quality. But what I think is the most impressive is that new tracks have been added where there were previously none. It all sounds great. Thirdly they've added a lot of QOL features. You can now highlight intractable objects and make Sam run instead of walking everywhere. These alone make the game so much better to play. However there are some changes I know some will be displeased with. Bosco's voice actor was replaced with an actual African American man and some lines were removed. However I didn't mind either of these changes. Bosco's new VA starts a little shaky at first but by the end of the season he fits the role very well. For the line removal it was only a handful, and while I understand the frustrations people may have with that it was a very small number and there's plenty of other racy or inappropriate jokes in the game. If the issues bug you there are places where you can still get the originals, I don't know if GoG gives you a copy when you buy the remaster as I already owned them. In the end despite the controversial changes I believe this is the best version of Sam and Max Season 1.

A dilligent remaster

The freshened-up graphics make the game look more like I remember it and less like it actually looked, which is a good thing. They also got their hands on the original uncompressed sound files, so audio quality is noticeably better! The point-and-click gameplay didn't need any changes, but they've rolled some changes from later seasons into this one to make the controls a bit smoother. The dialogue writing is excellent and the dynamic between Sam & Max is consistently wonderful. The high joke frequency can get a bit exhausting when playing for long stretches of time, but fortunately the game comes pre-portioned into short episodes! Puzzles are mostly fairly straightforward, though I did get stuck a few times. Expect dialogue and item puzzles. There are also a handful of driving segments, but these are solved by figuring out the trick, not through twitch driving skill. The game's biggest issue hasn't changed from the original release: Season 1 and 2 were made on a very tight budget, and so they have to recycle environments and characters between episodes. The writers were usually clever enough to come up with an amusing reason for it, but you still get tired of the same street and handful of interiors that make up the backbone of each episode. (You can safely gnore the people crying "censorship", btw. Note the discrepancy between the "overall" and the "verified owners" rating -- they're downvoting a game they've never played because they heard it's less racist now. The changes -- besides the new voice actor for Bosco, replacing a White comedian doing a Black Guy Voice with an actual Black VA -- are extremely minor. I'd watched a Let's Play of the original release a month before playing the remaster, so my memories of it were pretty fresh, and I didn't notice any of them. Note also that Skunkape Games consists pretty much entirely of people who worked on the original release, so this isn't a case of a third party tampering with someone else's "creative vision".)

It's good

Bought this on steam a while ago and replayed it a lot, the jokes are all good, some don't stick but they rarely last a long time and I found myself laughing at a lot of exchanges between the titular duo and NPC's. There are some difficult puzzles that had me scratching my head at times, nothing as intense as devil's playhouse though, if you backtrack and go back to older locations you're more likely than not to find an interactable or npc that can help you out. This is the sort of game you'd play just to see the skits and dialogue, sam and max make an incredible while also making meta commentary on a variety of topics thatt remain relevant today I'm seeing however a lot of people giving this game 1-2 star because they changed a small amount of the more questionable jokes and acting as if it were the end of the world. These people seem to me much more offended by the changes than the "snowflakes" they claim these changes were catered to. These are small dialogue alterations and it's more than reasonable to change voice actors for Bosco considering the VA's stand up career and honestly it's just better to have a VA cast that isn't entirely composed of white dudes, especially if they have to start imitating accents and possibly make very bad and borderline racist caricatures of minorities, and sam and max generally have a rather diverse cast anwyays so it makes sense. If you are offended by the VA change so much, i'm sorry to say but you're the "snowflake" here. The spirit of the game remains entirely unchanged and people who claim that the new game is a bastardization of the original for these small changes don't know what they're talking about. The "Dark humour" people claim was removed is still there, e.g. most things max says, they literally changed a total of maybe 4 jokes across all 6 episodes, the outrage some people are expressing is completely undeserved and a completely blind emotional response. Enjoy the game, it's good.

Had a good time with this while still stuck at home. I remember playing this game when I was younger, and it's even better than I remember it :)

Solid Remaster

This isn't the best of Telltales Sam & Max games, season 2 and 3 were definitely better. But the updated graphics are a welcome improvement and so is the fact that every chapter isn't a separate game like it was originally. I would rate it 4/5 but there are so many one star reviews complaining about censorship that I'll give it five just to offset those. There's only a couple of censored lines and they aren't really noticeable. The original version wasn't exactly raunchy, it was way toned down compared to Sam & Max: Hit the Road, and even that isn't that bad by today's standards. Overall it's a good remaster of a decent game. If you're curious about what was censored the original games are included so you can make your own call.
