Description
The Holy War is over. The demons of Gologotha have been banished, yet the cost has been terribly high. The Creator, god of the Fyllid, has been defeated and the faith of the people has begun to wane. Petty squabbles among the five remaining gods has caused the land to split into five mystical territories - each at war with one another. Into this divided land steps a wizard, a man haunted by his past, whose choices will shape the future.

Which god will he choose? Will he sacrifice himself to change this world for the better, or will what remains of this world be sacrificed for one god's glory?

Take a journey behind-the-scenes of one of David Perry's favourite games with the Sacrifice editorial.

Sacrifice includes the Scapex Editor.

A hidden gem

Often overlooked, this classic is a true original. I cant think of any game since that has tried to emulate it, wich is strange when you consider hwo much fun it is. Strictly speaking it is an RTS, but with RPG elements attached. The growth of your main character is decided by the choices you make during the campaign. This mainly takes place when picking missions. Initially, you will be welcomed by all five gods, and they all offer missions for you. Picking a certain god will give you a summon and a spell at the present tier from that god. So your spells and creatures will vary very much depending on your coiche of diety(s). But beware, the "good" gods wont like it if you side with the evil ones too much, closing of their paths. Dont worry too much though, the gods play their own games and make alliances above your head. Opportunities for shifting alliances and backstabbing might come from unexpected sources. The coolest thing about the game is how different the story is experienced when you replay and choose different gods/missions. Play the game in a certain way and you will encounter the antagonists "right hand" early and often. Pick different missions and you will never encounter the scoundrel, only hear rumors. A common complaint is the difficulty of the game. This 100% dependant on your choice of missions as that control what creatures you can summon and what spells you can cast. Adding insult to injury, some missions are just plain easier or harder than the other choice. If you want easy mode, make sure to pick the mission that lets you summon gnomes. Rather slow ranged unit, but their attacks are instantaneous(!) and never miss(!). Summon these in high numbers, focus the enemy wizard first and you will win any map(except the last one) by soul attrition warfare.

Strong replayability

You play as a wizard who is something of a "mysterious wanderer" at first, but the story develops in snippets as you go on. You complete levels working for one of five gods at a time who give you a power and a summonable creature every level. As you go on, some gods will shut their doors to you and you will take a different path to the final level almost every time. Do you work exclusively for the goddess of life? the blustery fire god of progress and industry? As I learned the story, I could come up with different motivations for my characters choices. OH, and the gameplay is really fun. You can even play the same level in different ways. Definitely worth playing if you never had.

Let me start again.

The game begins with a world in ashes. You and your familiar find the lone survivor, a blind seer, and begin telling him the story of how this bizarrely beautiful world came to ruin. Were you helping the goddess Persephone lead her forces of nature in instilling this world with order, when a minion of Charnel, the evil god of death and decay, caused your downfall? Perhaps his forces overwhelmed you, and nothing is left of you now but your maggot-ridden corpse. Of course, that's not what really happened. Let me start again. You were aiding Pyro, lord of fire and technological progress in paving the way for an industrial revolution that would unite this chaotic world of fantasy under a fiery banner, when the ethereal army of Stratos prevented you from achieving that goal. You were struck down by lightning, and now nothing is left but your charred remains. Of course, that's not what really happened. Let me start again. This destruction was brought about by you, and your devotion to slaughter, death, and, above all, power. As a servant of Charnel, you were well on your way to destroying this pathetic excuse for a world, when your climb was haulted by James, earthworm god of peace and agriculture. You will have to return another day, if success is to be had. Of course, ... You are given many choices in Sacrifice, and can pursue many different lines of ethos, motivation, and style. "Style" is the word here, in a game that is unique in its visual presentation and unparalleled in its voice acting. Was that Time Curry I heard? The replay value of the game is off the charts. It keeps me coming back again and again, wondering how this or that choice will affect the inevitable fate of the world -- which I know to be inevitable due to the past-tense storytelling, but this does nothing to diminish my desire to change it. I've played the game many times. I've bought it twice. Let me start again. Pros: Incredible plot, style, and ambiance. The graphics were great at the time, and have aged well, into a demented old wine. Can run on a netbook (after a fashion). Replay value is great with so many plot lines and potential motivations to pursue. Cons: Difficulty scales sharply upwards towards the end of the campaign.

A unique take on real-time strategy

Sacrifice is a unique and - for me - nail-bitingly exciting experience. What drew me to it back in the day was the visual style, which looks like a well-executed cross between Hieronymus Borsh paintings and an episode of Earthworm Jim. Even today, the uniqueness of the visuals is impressive, and to my knowledge, nothing has come along since that is even remotely like it. The skirmishes in question are incredibly fun. You fight as the wizard from a third-person perspective and summon monsters around you to aid you in combat. The monsters are all specialized to deal with certain kinds of threat - at the first tiers, a simple rock-paper-scissors sort of arrangement, while in the later ones it becomes remarkably complex. The fights are frantic and complicated and reward well-executed tactics. Anyone even remotely interested in real-time strategy should try this game. It is an interesting shift of perspective when you, the general, are right there on the battlefield along with your troops, rather than directing them from your armchair in the sky. There is no radar other than a static map and a small, featureless minimap, and no reconnaissance other than what you can keep in your head. It combines the speedy strategy of Red Alert with its own high-octane brawl and cunning magic system that can cripple an enemy, beef up a friend, or call down death from above. This is an absolute must-play.
