The Holy War is over. The demons of Gologotha have been banished, yet the cost has been terribly high. The Creator, god of the Fyllid, has been defeated and the faith of the people has begun to wane. Petty squabbles among the five remaining gods has caused the land to split into five mystical territories - each at war with one another. Into this divided land steps a wizard, a man haunted by his past, whose choices will shape the future.
Which god will he choose? Will he sacrifice himself to change this world for the better, or will what remains of this world be sacrificed for one god's glory?

this is an enjoyable game, and its humor is a nice touch, but i couldn't get past how dumb your creatures are. it wouldn't be so bad, had you at least had the ability to zoom out at a reasonable level, but moving camera as far back as possible will barely put the flying units in view, leaving them at too close of a level to be of any use.
One of the greatest RTS games ever made. Can be quite difficult, and the campaign has a lot of replayability. There are some problems, but most are caused by limited technology of the time. In multiplayer does the game really stand out. Teaming up to defeat a stronger opponent, just to notice your ally is banishing your altar, always feels as bad as it should.
I'm pretty bad at reviews, I just love this game. Sacrifice was one of the first games I ever played, and years later re-found it. Since then I've bought it three times, and gog is the fourth time.
Often overlooked, this classic is a true original. I cant think of any game since that has tried to emulate it, wich is strange when you consider hwo much fun it is. Strictly speaking it is an RTS, but with RPG elements attached.
The growth of your main character is decided by the choices you make during the campaign. This mainly takes place when picking missions. Initially, you will be welcomed by all five gods, and they all offer missions for you. Picking a certain god will give you a summon and a spell at the present tier from that god. So your spells and creatures will vary very much depending on your coiche of diety(s). But beware, the "good" gods wont like it if you side with the evil ones too much, closing of their paths. Dont worry too much though, the gods play their own games and make alliances above your head. Opportunities for shifting alliances and backstabbing might come from unexpected sources.
The coolest thing about the game is how different the story is experienced when you replay and choose different gods/missions. Play the game in a certain way and you will encounter the antagonists "right hand" early and often. Pick different missions and you will never encounter the scoundrel, only hear rumors.
A common complaint is the difficulty of the game. This 100% dependant on your choice of missions as that control what creatures you can summon and what spells you can cast. Adding insult to injury, some missions are just plain easier or harder than the other choice.
If you want easy mode, make sure to pick the mission that lets you summon gnomes. Rather slow ranged unit, but their attacks are instantaneous(!) and never miss(!). Summon these in high numbers, focus the enemy wizard first and you will win any map(except the last one) by soul attrition warfare.
You play as a wizard who is something of a "mysterious wanderer" at first, but the story develops in snippets as you go on. You complete levels working for one of five gods at a time who give you a power and a summonable creature every level. As you go on, some gods will shut their doors to you and you will take a different path to the final level almost every time. Do you work exclusively for the goddess of life? the blustery fire god of progress and industry? As I learned the story, I could come up with different motivations for my characters choices.
OH, and the gameplay is really fun. You can even play the same level in different ways. Definitely worth playing if you never had.
