I needed a fix after a recent D****o release and came back to play this game again after almost 2 decades. Game is still fun and worth it. I like to go explore and kill everything within sight haha.
I picked up both Sacred - Gold and Sacred 2 - Gold without knowing too much about either or being that into ARPGs, just like that style of fantasy setting and games fitting that niche, though had mostly stuck to RPGs. Then, that day came where I was looking through my games collection for something different genere wise from the last game I'd been playing and gave Sacreed 1 & 2 a fair shot at things. Really glad I did do because after completing a number of the early quests, things started to click and I began to see the depth, love and care the team behind the titles had put in there. What is really impressive to me is the world itself seems full of life and not just running to and from endless battle after battle. There is also within this world, factions vying for power, plenty of humour, surprises with quests that alter dependant of your alignment along with random events, seems like there's always something new to see. There's some indepth game mechanics powering it all under the hood, with runes, gear sets, combo powers and character builds. At first I had no idea on any of this, infact found it overwhelming. Overtime, slowly learning these systems through playing without much of a clue, the game becomes more and more addictive and fun, in a way I haven't really seen in current titles. Now at the point where have reached the mid thirties in level with a couple of characters and seeing synergy between skills i've put points in. Feels like had so much enjoyment yet looking at the map, there's a vast amount undiscovered. Can highly recommend both games, when they do click, you realise how special they are. Also discovered there is a Mod to resolve Sacreds original screen resolution. With this both games can stand up against anything else with the whole feeling of the living world the game is set in putting it up there with The Witcher series even. Finally Blind Guardian in Sacred 2 ! Epic.
I played 150+ hours in this game and I will play much much more. I played Sacred also hundres of hours years ago. Character development can be little tricky but with good character game can be easy even at highest dificulty. Hand drawn graphics is so gorgerous in this game, music and sounds are also very good. Gererally game run great with dgVoodoo but in Windows 11 can be problem with Explorer at game exit sometimes. At Windows 10 I don't saw any problems. Game also have pretty low requirements even to run with dgVoodoo when run smooth on i5 2500K with GeForce 9500GT when I tried on my older PC, I don't had any problems with 3060Ti with latest drivers on my main PC.
I see a lot of reviews mentioning it being short. Yes, both Campaigns are short. But there are so many things to do outside of them. Clever little side quests, areas to discover, such as Pac-man, Jason's Machete... A game where even the devs didn't know everything because so many were involved.
I never saw the issue of high level melee characters having trouble with groups. If anything, that was where they shined. If you're surrounded by enemies, that means they're in lots of trouble. Smash them with a combo and level up out of it.
Does it have flaws? Absolutely, but show me a game that doesn't. I played several hundred hours on disc, and had not a single CTD. A few weird bugs, like the skateboard horse, but at the end of the day? Totally worth any price you pay.
