Runaway: A Road Adventure

The first thing the game establishes is that Brian has no qualms about putting his life in extreme danger for no good reason. And given how he reacts to certain events he might be psychotic. The story is engaging enough, but a bit contrived and silly at times. The puzzles are sometimes okei, and other times complete moon logic. Often it's easy overlook items because many of them are tiny or well hidden, this makes it easy to get stuck on a puzzles. Always check containers twice, and check them again later. You might find something new. Don't make this your first adventure game, but it's worth a playthrough if you are a fan of the genre.

I'm going to do like Deponia and buy the trilogy.

Runaway: A Road Adventure is one of the best adventure games you can find out there. I just played again after 20 years and it is as good as I remember. If you've never played it, please don't miss the opportunity!

Have played this game in many years after its release and i can say i was charmed by its graphic and in-game animation (not the cutscenes animation, characters look a bit weird and spoouky there!) Puzzle design is generally good and some puzzles are really satisfying to solve, however you will still find pixel hunting, a couple of obscure solutions (getting the wrench out of the trough in Douglasville is nuts), repeated tedious actions (filling the train water tank in Douglasville for example). It is also interesting to point out the games characteristic of not letting you picking up stuff unless you know you need them, which is in contrast with classic adventure style which is picking up everything. This is not necessarily bad and seems to work, however is some instances this is implemented poorly with limited hints to the player. The duration of the game is not bad, could be longer but i was happy enough. Spoken dialoges and the music are ok. Despite its small flaws, i'd recommend the game.

Do you have a hideously large range of incidental knowledge, pertaining to thermodynamics, old films and how various pieces of machines work? If so, this is the game for you! For the rest of us, however, some of the solutions can seem totally out of the blue and illogical. It has an okay graphical range; while designs are good and dynamic, they aren't very interesting or original, and the lip sync is a joke, but then, so is much of the dialogue, and not the funny kind. Truly, with some greater effort to logical puzzles, it may have been a worthwhile venture back into the point and click adventures of old... Unfortunately, for a while, all it was was a bitter memory of why the genre was dying out.
