Core gameplay is nice but there's no sense of progression at all. Arcade-action games like Assault Android Cactus or Broforce feel like they have some progression, but here there's nothing. The framing device for the story gets very annoying too.
Warning: Kinda mewling (but honest, promise) review:
Arcade game from the mid nineties, with:
Timers (sometimes) + Infinite spawning enemies (sometimes, till X-dude is dead, which makes the army magically disappear).
No choices or ways to make it "yours" through customization or the like. "Story driven" means roller-coaster linearity, and everybody's an uninteresting sociopath. And with you as a robot in a leather jacket, following orders.
5 meter firefight ranges max, no matter the weapons (view distance extends circa to there).
Slow travel time on every projectile, ballistic, energy, doesn't matter. Sidestepping circle-kitin' is the name of the game.
Melee is...just a 1m range arc weapon. Don't imagine yourself a cyber ninja. More like cyber whack-a-mole.
Uninteresting AI (Descent style, moves to reacquire LOS, that's it. Ever....Ehm, in as far as I got before losing interest anyways. Who knows, maybe it turned magical three more uninteresting levels later).
Psychopathy "slay everything for style's sake, civvies optional (but dangle like pinatas begging for it)" game.
Meeeh.....
Crusader: No Regrets did it way better nearly 20 years ago, and at least had environmental destruction and more heft on the tactics side.
Though the very hip Synth-re-hipster Cyberpunk theme (which got me to buy) is....nice, I guess, the soundtrack is surprisingly (for a pure style game) without impact.
Obviously, I didn't have the best experience. You might do better, but I'm seriously regretting hipstering out with my money this time.
Alternate marketing line for this launch:
"Did you enjoy being a masked psychopath in Hotline: Miami? Enjoy finding the best line of murder through piles of enemies with timing, ultra-violence and clever solutions? Then this game is for you!...As long as you only cared about the masked psycho part of that spiel and dig Space Invaders gameplay. It's what the kids want, you see."
