Inform yourself before buying! This is more of a theme Add-On than an entire game.
Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 basically is an Add-On to the first game and not really something new and I wouldn't recommend buying part two if you own part one. Actually I wouldn't recommend buying this at all - just buy / play its predecessor... The problem with this game is that it introduces either too few or simply the wrong things. In terms of actually creating your own rollercoasters this game has nearly nothing new to offer (I didn't check everything but it seems you often get tricked by the many build options you now have which are just about different "cars" for your rides you could change on the fly in part one but which now create a rollercoaster of its own which is sort of cheap). Thrill and gentle rides are the same - only very few new rides. There are some major additions though but it's about stalls and themes only. You now have quite a large number of stalls to choose from. Unfortunately that's a rather boring although still welcome addition to the game. It sure is nice to sell chicken wings instead of hamburgers or fries but at the end of the day it doesn't make a difference and doesn't enhance your park at all... The additions to the themes are quite major but they create the major drawbacks of this game. Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 now is entirely focused around themes which at least for me give a terrible gaming experience. You get all sorts of different decorations for quite some themes which often end up in embarassing "animatronics" of people or other characters. If someone really wants to decorate his park and add extensive themes then this game probably is a great addition to the first one. For me things like giant half naked dancing women or swordfighting skeletons don't add anything to the game. In fact I'd hate having to decorate each and every ride of my own. I just want to create a cool park, think about the layout of my rides and paths and try to make the best of the space I have. Unfortunately this is what the game PREVENTS you from doing: Pretty much all levels now are about themes and locations. There simply are no more maps which just let you build up your park while giving you some minor problems to solve. You now don't really have space at all because the maps are filled with decoration and gimmicks (who wouldn't want to build a park on Alcatraz with giant cell blocks or in Rio during carnival with lots of giant ballons and those dancing animatronic women everywhere). In combination with goals like "build a park using the flying theme only" this is where this game falls flat. To me this entire idea of forcing themes on the player is a bad choice... I expected being able to build parks on new maps with new challenges. Ok granted - this theme thing is a new challenge but why has the entire game to be about just that? I enjoyed planning my park and having an eye on the big picture rather than spending hours decorating my single rollercoaster. It's also interesting to see that you'll actually find some strange design decisions. You for example either can charge an entrance fee to your park or fees per ride. It's no longer possible to do both at the same time and as I see it this is a map setting so you cannot change... My final verdict is that you definitely should know what this game actually offers before you decide to buy this. If you're into making your rides drive through interesting landscapes, building castles around your coaster or something like that Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 is for you. If you just want to build your own rides and keep your park up and running then you should stay away from this game and stick to the predecessor. The additions to this aspect of the game are quite minor so you won't really miss something... That's why I rate this game with just two stars. There still are remnants of the first game left but the additions of aspects that matter to me are very minor and the theme thing sucks the fun out of it...
