That's OK because no one's perfect, and you don't have to be to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die, all of the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade your manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.
A genealogical roguelite where every death results in stronger children and a fresh new look at tackling the castle minions.
More than 30 unique traits affect gameplay in unique ways, such as Colorblindness, Gigantism, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Procedurally generated castles that extend replay value by making every attempt a unique experience.

The procedural generation is satisfactory, combat and bosses are fun, with a nice wide variety of possible characters to chose from. Can be a bit of a slow start and there is a bit of a learning curve with the controls. Once you play a bit to get a feel for the game it becomes quite the enjoyable experience. Definitly rewards skill and commitment as the upgrads start to add up over time. Resulting in those hard areas becoming much easier. Only downside of the gold based progression is it can feel grindy at times.
I just finished Rogue Legacy a few days ago, and thought the game actually deserves that I write a review about it. It took me 33 hours till I could beat the final boss, and all of these hours were a lot of fun. Honestly, I don't believe that the game is SO hard as many people say. Of course you will die a lot at the beginning, because your characters will be very weak. The good thing is that dying never gets frustrating because with the collected money you will almost always be able to upgrade your next heir, so there will be progress all the time, meaning that you are actually never wasting your time. At the end of the game you will be at least five times stronger than at the beginning (hit points, weapon damage, ...), and will be able to fight your way through all the castles without that much trouble, even if you are not a magic jump&run gamer (I am none). By the way, I played the game with the keyboard, and it worked very well.
I often found myself to play another round of Rogue Legacy instead of my other games, because it offers instant fun, and I just wanted to finish another room, to collect a bit more money for my heir. I can really recommend this game to anybody who has only the slightest interest in either jump&runs or RPGs.
First off, the Mac port is laggy as all get out. It performs terribly, and with this game's need for execution that hurts. A lot.
As for the game itself in theory, it's a great idea. It borrows from Rogue-like concepts and uses them in a different way.
However in practice it has problems. The hit detection is weird at times (though that could be related to the lagginess mentioned above). Bad for a game so combat-heavy.
Further, the upgrade purchasing systems punish exploration. If you go into this game blind, and buy the wrong things, you end up shooting the costs of upgrades way up, and make it difficult on yourself to proceed. I think that's a poor design decision when you're going to hide the bulk of he upgrade tree from the player, both in terms of the Castle and the Runes.
Cute little game. Get it on a good sale.
This game is addicting in its gameplay if you enjoy fast paced 2d dungeon exploring adventure. That really sums it up, very fast and random pace building up your characters using gold you get from different runs through randomly generated castles. Having played it a lot, I've noticed many room types are re used and I've started to memorize their basic setup, but despite my initial concern of this making the game get boring and redundant, I have a blast each time. They really did a great job in keeping the castle lay out fresh each run and they made enough rooms and tasks for variation that keeps you engaged.
I managed to beat it after 12 hours of play and 120 character deaths. The plot twist before the final boss was great and really gave me a sense of the whole story and situation being worthwhile when I got to it. As the credits rolled I thought it was unfortunate that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the game anymore since now it would be an endless grind against weak monsters, until I noticed it was now marked as "New Game +". Yep, after beating it the monsters, and dangers, of the castle get upgraded, along with the cash rewards, and some final weapons and armor can be gained in the castle after the first play through. So it still has me completely hooked.
This game is best played with a game pad I'd say. I tried using a keyboard and it was very hard with how fast paced the game is.
A punishing Rogue Like platformer somewhat reminiscent of Castlevania. You will die, and your children will continue your legacy, and they will have congenital disorders and general strangeness, and your family castle will be improved.
