Pros
+ Decent soundtrack
+ Artstyle looks cool
+ Stat growth system is cool
+ Many characters to choose from
+ Combo/juggling system is pretty fun
Cons
- Some Characters are terrible and take too long to be enjoyable.
- Tooltips are awfully undescriptive
- Minimap is completely useless and misleading
- Some missions can be incredibly tedious
- You get knocked to the ground if you run into any type of obstacle (very annoying)
- Clunky controls
- Many zones/levels are poorly designed:
I must say that this game rocks, i am older player and I find it hard to get into any modern game as I am dedicated to old school. Yet this game is fun to play - it can be 5 mins play or a few hours session.
On Linux Mint 20 it detected my ps3 controller with no problem, assigned comfortable keys and turned on vibration - pretty cool if you ask me. No problems noticed in first 2hrs of gaming.
I must only say that there are no game servers online and if I want to create one I was not able to enter the name for the server - my gamepad just stopped reacting.
Yet, if all NES games get such quality remakes without silly 3rd dimension I would probably purchase more games like this one. I recommend.
Thinking about getting this game? Ask yourself three questions.
Do i feel nostalgic about oldschool unforgiving difficulty? Yes or No
Am i eager to spend time leveling up my characters? Yes or No
Will i explore a small openworld retro pixel town? Yes or No
If you said yes to all three then you wont regret it,
Have Fun!
A game that is on my wishlist for a very long time because I felt in love with it when we played at my friend's house in hotseat. A remake based on the localization of a game, "really?", you should think. This is more a tribute to the experience we had as childs rather than to the Kunio-games. Intended or I'm the only one who feels like this, I don't know.
RCRU is a beat 'em up game with level up system, manageable stat development, and loose combo mechanics. There is a lot of characters with different focus and different way of crowd control, because most of the fights is actually about crowd control. The difficulty (especially on higher difficulty) is what we call "NES-like". The AI calculate the distance, the timing, and moderately capable of sensing openings in your movements. Your special moves is the only way of countering this so you have to know the characters inside out if you want to play on hard. You can chain your moves very well and situationally anything can follow up anything successfuly. Unlike the original game however there is an energy bar to limit the use of special moves but you will barelly feel it if you not just spam them.
It is an open world game but some places requires story progress to get access. After you get the grip of the mechanics you will often find yourself going back to previous areas for buying things to develop your character. The world is made up from separate places and whenever you re-enter one, random enemies will spawn again. You're not forced to beat them and can keep moving forward but hey! You get XP and cash for them, and after all the battle is the fun part!
Multiplayer, online and hotseat. Story mode, arena VS., new game + bonus options, unlockables, even after achieving 100% completion you still will find fun here. Additionally I would love to mention something. If you run the game without Galaxy client you can play online with direct connection instead of lobby. For me this was an important plus.
This game was pretty fun at first, playing with friends is also fun, but frustrating if you are not careful with moves. The character improvement system is novel and interesting. You have to buy food to increase your stats and you have to buy moves to increase your combat repetoire. Game has plenty of easter eggs towards the genre and plenty of characters and moves to try and test. This is fun at first!
Then comes the bad... Wow, I have a friend that loves these types of games and we were excited to play at first but wow... did these guys miss the mark after time went by. Some characters are clearly loved on by the devs while others are hated to the point they are useless. Some characters are slow, move slow, hit slow and they do are not compensated for it with increased damage. Brawlers and Wrestlers mostly suck and are useless compared to Ryan and Glen for example. In fact the Devs hate wrestling entirely and makes you pay heavily if you miss grabing characters by stunning you. Seriously?
Near the end the ememies all play keep away so it is nothing but a jockey for position to keep from getting back/pincer attacked because that is about the only think the AI tries to do to you. It is beyond annoying requiring you to use only fast move/attack characters. Enemies can move backwards almost as fast you can run. Spamming the same move in an ultra boring pattern is the key to wining... almost too easy in fact. You can mow down enemies on mass with certain moves while other moves jsut do not work or will never land due to how they execute. You are going to spend a lot of time running enemies down and it's annoying!
Would like to see more games like this so I think it is still worth buying and playing, but play with friends and avoid the wrestler brawlers because the devs nerfed them hard. It is clear that more than 50% of the moves and Characters in this game were just padding without any useful purpose.
